Rebuilding percussion hammers
« on: December 15, 2016, 08:29:16 AM »
Gentlemen,  I just picked up a 1974 Uberti 1860 Army.  It looks as if someone repeatedly snapped the hammer on bare cones and really dorked it up.  I've got an extra hammer to use, but does anyone on here re-weld hammer faces?  I've got a couple that could use it.

I use a mill and drill a flat bottomed hole in the hammer face.  Then insert a hard plug and face off the hammer.  Easier for me since I sold off the welder.

Similar problem to Pettifogger.  Sold off my welder (I didn't weld real well anyway) when I retired and also sold off my mill.  Therefore, I take the absolute easiest way out and just fit a new replacement hammer.  Seems a waist but is a whole bunch simpler.

PS:  I would however, be willing to take a "hammer" to those who dry fire Cap Guns on bare Nipples.  Ruins the hammer and the nipples.

This is how the weld should look.

I'm figuring the nipples are just as screwed as the hammer face.  So:  Twer it mine (wouldn't be.  I don't like Uberti) I'd pull the nipples and donate em to the scrap bag.  Order a new set of SlixShot nipples.  A new Hammer and wait for the parts to come in.  While waiting, correct the Barrel to Arbor fit, Polish up all the action innards.  Trash the OEM Main Spring for a nice After-Market lighter item and do a little tuning on the Trigger/Bolt spring.  By the time the new hammer is ready for fitting and the new nipples arrive, it'll be ready to shoot.
