I would have answered sooner, but my keyboard was malfunctioning.  The repair guy said that it looked like drool had shorted it out, but I told him that I had no idea what that substance might be.  I'll be researching the option of a waterproof cover.

Fortunately I don't have my heart set on this gun.  I have been very blessed of late with some extra income that has gone into the gun account.  My lovely bride is also very understanding and she feels that I should accumulate as many as I can before retirement locks us into a fixed income.  In the last year and a half or so, I have acquired (all reproduction) a Henry, a Spencer, a '66 carbine, a Richards-Mason in .44 Colt, a 7 1/2" SAA and the recent NWMP 1876 Carbine.  Those are, of course, in addition to a number of other guns that I already had, so I feel pretty satisfied right now.  Of course I like to add an open top to fill the gap between the RM and the SAA, as well as a '92 (between my '86 and my '94's) and an 1895 to complete the series, but those are down the road.  I have enough guns to keep me going for a very long time.  Every once in a while another gun sneaks in, like my C96 Mauser, but I try to keep my guard up.

Anyway, gents, this has been an interesting conversation, with some humor mixed in with the enlightening comments.  Thanks!

Case coloring was done by Dean Menk of Ohio who has long since retired. He was the one many Colt collectors used over Turnbull for being more authentic. The gun shoots dead nuts on. I finished the grips out of burl walnut and had the BS & TG silver plated. John Schultz did the blue. You won't find this level of work on a new one.

Well, rats.  Most of my free money just went into a new RCBS Pro-Melt lead furnace (they're on a decent sale right now, by the way, with a $75 rebate too).  Unless I end up with more overtime soon, this will go to someone else.  So again, "somebody buy this". ::)

The Thick Plottens ...........

Now that we have the rest of the story and know the gun comes from the Renowned Fox Creek Kid, my prior comments, while accurate for "others" don't in this case apply.  That Open Top represents a very good buy.

Coal Creek ....... It is still calling Youuuuuuu ouuuuuu ouuuuu ouuuuu.  Think Mortgage.   ;D   Take yer Broker to lunch.  Make it a really GOOD lunch  ::)

I'll have to say that you make me laugh, Coffinmaker, although it all hits kind of close to home.  We'll see as the auction gets closer to closing...

You'll be the ruin of me, Coffinmaker.  Wise or foolish, I broke down and put down the winning bid on this gun.  I had to rent out my dog for the down payment (we don't rent pigs) and I'm scheduled to sell my plasma twice a week for the next 20 years to pay off the rest, but I'm sure it will be worth it. I figure that it's an appropriate way to celebrate the 135th anniversary of the Gunfight Near the OK Corral.

Even with the assurances, it's a bit of a calculated gamble buying a used gun sight-unseen, but I've had excellent results in the past and this one seemed fairly safe.  As I've mentioned, I actually have the money on hand, although I had to borrow from one area of our home budget to cover this one for a few weeks.  Now if Major 2 and Coffinmaker will just leave me alone for a while and stop tempting me, I can let my gun fund build back up again.  I really would like an original 1895 Winchester, but I can't keep spending all my money every time I get $500...  ;)

well said.... and there is another indorsment you can count on..... :)

Now .... in our defence , Coffin , Abilene, Larson & myself wouldn't have known you were tempted, vulnerable or even looking
had you not  first mentioned it....  ;)

I mean.... we ourselfes are gunaholics .... we also become bumfuzzled, when prudence was perhaps a better laid course  :-\

A years from now we should revist this thread , then the pinch in the wallet will be long forgotten and the Gun a sweet acquisition.

welcome then to Storm..... again  :)

Like I said early on, I didn't really expect that anyone here would try to talk me out of buying a new gun, but at least those here would understand the desire.  Some of my coworkers ask me why I want another gun.  "How many do you HAVE?"

Anyway, I think this one will work out just fine.  If Fox Creek Kid would like to get in touch with me for more background to this one, that would be great!

I'd had people ask why ,  and how many.... YADA

my answer is about the same each time.... to the first , "BECAUSE I CAN ! "
the second ..."I don't really know off the top of my head...I'd need to refer to my list of Serial numbers & photo documents. "

You done good. Not just because you know it will be in good shape, but the stuff done to it makes it special, especially for the price.
