I would have answered sooner, but my keyboard was malfunctioning. The repair guy said that it looked like drool had shorted it out, but I told him that I had no idea what that substance might be. I'll be researching the option of a waterproof cover.
Fortunately I don't have my heart set on this gun. I have been very blessed of late with some extra income that has gone into the gun account. My lovely bride is also very understanding and she feels that I should accumulate as many as I can before retirement locks us into a fixed income. In the last year and a half or so, I have acquired (all reproduction) a Henry, a Spencer, a '66 carbine, a Richards-Mason in .44 Colt, a 7 1/2" SAA and the recent NWMP 1876 Carbine. Those are, of course, in addition to a number of other guns that I already had, so I feel pretty satisfied right now. Of course I like to add an open top to fill the gap between the RM and the SAA, as well as a '92 (between my '86 and my '94's) and an 1895 to complete the series, but those are down the road. I have enough guns to keep me going for a very long time. Every once in a while another gun sneaks in, like my C96 Mauser, but I try to keep my guard up.
Anyway, gents, this has been an interesting conversation, with some humor mixed in with the enlightening comments. Thanks!
