45-60 at the range
« on: July 20, 2016, 07:47:02 PM »
Haven't taken my 1876 Chappy to the ramge in over a year.  One of my more accurate loads, 400 gr Lazercast bullet, 23.0 of 5744 with teddy gut filler.  This load for modern reproductions only.  At 100 yds, 1 5/8" group.  The first 2 rds cut the X ring and the 3rd was in the 9 ring.  I decide to stop while I was ahead.  I find the disk insert in the globe front sight is more accurate for me when shooting targets.

Nice shooting Silver Rings!  You have to be pleased with that performance.  What is the diameter of the black bulol on your 100 yd. target, pls.?

The black is 8".  I was shooting off a bench over sand bags.

Thanks for the reply SR.  I too use an 8" black bull for 100 meter open sighted shooting.   But I found that my (Uberti) rifle leads badly with Lazer cast bullets, and prefers very soft lead.  Your Chappy does well with them, I see.

I only fired about 30 rds and didn't check for leading afterward.  The above load gives about 1275 fps, so it is not a hot load.

For what it is worth, here is some info for your guys even tho you are shooting a 45-60  I shoot a 45-75 and in doing gobs of research on loads and so forth, I perchanced to come across an original box of cartridges for it and on the back was information concerning bullet alloy and the factory--back then-- said to use bullets cast using a 16:1 alloy.  That is what I use in my rifle and have no problems with leading, etc.  Now this may not work in your rifles but I just figgured that it could be some tasty info for you.
