Crap! Something broke.
« on: July 03, 2016, 05:14:35 PM »
5 shots in and suddenly the hammer floats around, doesn't fall when trigger is pulled. Thoughts?

What maker?

Possibly the hammer spring, if no tension when hand cocking the hammer.??

Part 20.

Does the trigger have tension, hammer not held by trigger? Part 19     Is the hammer safety working or is it broken, not letting the trigger be pulled when lever squeezd, hammer will not fall if trigger pulled?  Part  91 or spring Part 94

I haven't taken it apart yet, but I'm guessing hammer spring. Trigger can be pulled, but doesn't release the hammer, no tension on the hammer at all.

You have a broken mainspring.

Thanks Buck, haven't had time to dig into it yet. Never taken one apart before so it will be a learning experience for me.

Yes pretty much. Your mainspring is broken or came loose.

Remove the Butt Stock.  The Mainspring will be "right there" on the lower tang.  Be sure to shake the loose part out of the action if slid
past the hammer.

BEFORE you install the new one, remove ALL the cross wise machine marks from the inside of the spring and POLISH it.

PS:  You may even wish to "reduce" the new spring a mite.  The Main Spring is "over sprung.)

Ok, so today I took the stock off, found the spring loose, but unbroken. Loosened the set screw and put the spring back on, tightened the set screw and we're back in business.

But not so fast. Put the stock back on and still the same problem. ?? I don't find any broken pieces anywhere. I'm confused. Took the stock back off and spring falls out.

Try #2, working good again, might have had spring slightly off center when putting stock back on. Working fine now.

Got out today for a few shots, seems to be running ok again. I don't know why the spring fell out? Laid it on the table too hard?

The SKY IS FALLING!!   The SKY IS FALLING!!  Run for your Lives!!  The SKY IS FALLING!!  Really ....... RUN FOR IT!!

First step.  Take it apart ...... again.  Inspect the hook lug the spring fits under and insure part of the lug has not broken off, allowing the
spring to slide out.
Second step.  With a glass (magnifying) inspect the hole in the lower tang.  INSURE there are threads in there.  The threads may well be
stripped.  Under the glass, inspect the threads on the tension screw.  INSURE the threads are not partially stripped away.  THEN:
Put the screw in the hole, without the spring, with your FINGERS.  If the screw wobbles around, you really do have a screw loose.  You
may well have to tap the hole out to a larger size screw.  If that is the case, I would recommend using an actual "set" screw that will disappear into the newly tapped hole.  Not authentic, but very effective.
