Remakes of classics simply ought not to be made.

Can you imagine a remake of Bogey's "Casablanca", "Treasure of the Sierra Madres", "The Maltese Falcon" or Gary Cooper's "High Noon" or any number of other golden oldies like "Shane"?

It wouldn't stop any Hollywood ego from remaking any movie classic......then shrug at the millions spent. SOMEONE thought that remaking TheMagnificent Seven was a good idea. Having said that, my heart sank when I heard the Coen Brothers were remaking True Grit and look what happened Pure Gold.

I loved the True Grit remake, much more realistic and closer to the novel. Appaloosa is another fantastic modern western that left me wanting a sequel. Jane Got a Gun was a recent western that just felt right. Then there's Bone Tomahawk, I know its niche western but I loved the premises. It felt very Robert E Howardesque. While I do love classic western cinema, I am not stuck in 1960. I do believe there are some excellent western films being made....just not enough of them.

I forgot, here's another modern day Spaghetti western that I loved The Salvation. It was filmed entirely outside the US with a largely European cast. A fantastic tale of revenge.

Mogorilla.......your rascal. On The Salvation, I watched it and watched it all. It wasn't bad, which is faint praise I know, BUT, I wish they would not advertise it was not made in the USA. It puts a slant on everything that follows. I'm a purist I guess. I have said it before, I have no regard for "Westerns" made in Spain, Israel or wherever. They are like buying a fake Rolex and showing it off to your buddies but they all know it fake and you know it's fake but everybody looks and says Hmmmmm.

I thank you for listening.

I enjoyed seeing the immigrant aspect of the West. Too often we Yanks are condemned by Europeans for the treatment of Native Americans without taking into consideration how many of those "Yanks" were actually immigrants from Europe. I read once that nigh on 60% of all soldiers in the West were new arrivals from Europe and another 15% were first generation European. The Army was one of the only guaranteed careers for newly arriving immigrants. Who knows for sure  but I found it interesting.

Nah, it's the "Lead Belly" Sharps "carbeen" that does it for me. Better scratch shot than the one made by Billy Dixon; 'ceptin' Dixon's was for real and at least twice the distance.

That's the reason that Southerners frequently referred to the Northern armies, the Yankees, as Mercenaries and Mercenary horde.   A good chunk of them were either mercenaries from Europe or immigrants impressed into service right off the boat.   I think Northern historian James McPherson estimated that 1/4 to 1/3rd of the Union Army was foreign born.    Also, much of the base of the Republican was made up of immigrants from Germany were socialist from the failed 1848 revolution in Europe.

Even before the War, I seem to recall notations here and there when reading about Robert E. Lee and Albert Sydney Johnson of the 2nd Cavalry having at least some Irishmen among the ranks.

I found a list of the men of the 7th and their background online a while back.  Most of them were either Northerners or Irish or German people.

This movie is available to Stream if you folks have an Amazon Prime account. Watched it again, and enjoyed it the second time around too. Far from a perfect movie, but a fun enough time in my opinion.

I was enjoying it until the silliness with the Gatling gun started up. A 405 gr .45-70 bullet at that range would be falling on the roofs not impacting walls parallel to the ground hitting guys behind the wall let alone be accurate enough to use as a sniper rifle. Started good but turned into a turkey. IMO.
The original was great except that too much of the final showdown action happened off screen or was discombobulated and hard to follow.
