.358 .376, what was the cut off date. I have 3 in the series maft 1896, 1903, & 1906. The 1896 has a .376 bore, the other 2 have av.358. A friend of mine told me he acquired an 03 with a .376 bore. To me, it would seem odd that the 03s would have both diameters. Throw a .358 heeled in a .358 would be dangerous. I can't see both in the 03.

I have a civilian 1892 shipped in 1903 and it has the larger bore. A 357/358 bullet will drop thru the bore.

With the 1903 you could get either caliber. Just another catalog item. By that time the .38 LC was being loaded with inside lubed hollow base bullets, and could be used in either bore.

When did Colt stop using the bored through cylinder for the 38. My Army Special has the modern cylinder, the 1892 cica 1903 does not.

I believe it was discontinued as an option with the introduction of the Army Special of 1908. I myself have a 1903 chambered in .38 spl with the .358 bore.

We are speaking of the Colt New Army & Navy series, Models USN 1889, US Army 1892-4-5-6-1901-03-06, all superseded by the Colt Army Special revolver of 1908, All what Colt considered the "41" size frame revolvers.

They are confusing because the Serial numbers are all one block. The Pat dates are on top of the barrel and that is one of the ways to tell SOME of them apart not all though. Some have markings on the right side of the barrel that helps too. I "The Book of Colt Firearms" by Wilson for Christmas and have been busily trying to learn, but there is a lot of material to sort through.

Yes, but we accept any fixed sight, pencil barrel, round butt K frame as a substitute. They're pretty easy to find.

I found mine for $400

I know the grips were wrong when I got it. I've change them to ones that are closer to correct.

The Smith is the better gun, but with only the 1899 fitting our period, other then expansion era with an 05. The Colt series 1892-1908 changed little externally, & is easier to come by.

Any S&W K frame round butt, blued, pencil barrel, fixed sights is allowed as a substitute for the 1899. Military portrayals will have 6" barrels.

Later model factory "short action" OK? Doesn't have to have the 1/2 circle front sight?
