Should the mainspring on my Pietta SAA clone contact the rear of the hammer (past the roller) when at rest?

The main spring should be on the roller at all times.

Let me try to explain better. When I install the mainspring, it extends past the roller and contacts the rear face of the hammer.

That is OK, as long as it does not impede swinging it to one side when disassembling. If it does then grind off the end a tad carefully and don't overheat.

I read the writing wrong or it wasn't writ right when I read it. I thought you meant it dropped off the rear. Like Fox Creek said you don't want it to stub against the hammer by about .050" at rest.

I might be reading this wrong, or seeing it in my head wrong, or not seeing it right, or not understanding what you are saying, but .......
When at rest, the Main Spring Tip should be just beyond the roller.  NOT in contact with the back radius of the hammer.  MORE important,
is to ensure the tip of the Main Spring does not contact nor drag on the rear of the hammer.  There should be obvious "daylight" between the tip of the Main Spring and the back of the hammer throughout the travel of the hammer.
