« on: November 12, 2005, 10:55:07 AM »
Has anybody made or used something other than the normal store bought black or brown for edge coating? I'm looking for white. Anybody have any ideas as to what to use?  ???Appreciate any help. Thanks

By edge coating, are you refering to what you dye the edges of the piece with? If so, I usually use the same dye I use on the rest of the piece. Sometimes I dye the edge black and then bevel it before dying the piece for a sligltly contrasting edge. Can't think of any white dye that would work well since white dye never gives me the result I like.

Marshal, the edge coating I'm refering to is the stuff they sell at leather craft shops in black or brown. Its aplied to the edge of the leather with a swab or brush and it's like paint but somewhat flexable when dry. it's what ya see on the edges of store bought belts. Thanks

Never seen a white edge coat.  When I want an undyed edge, I bevel and burnish the edge then cover with uncolored gum tragacanth.  If you need a white edge,  I'd suggest white lacing or a rolled edge with thin white leather.

Kid Cavalier, Thanks. That might be my only option. I wonder if the white stuff the put on the roofs of moblie homes might work, thinned out a little?

This is probably too late but for my two cents worth, if I wanted a white edge coat I would use the white shoe polish with the foam appilactor and then seal it with gun tragacanth.  OK?

white fabric paint - available at most craft stores or sewing shops. May take a couple of coats and on the edge since it's porous you may need to add seal coat first - for a seal coat use something like Super Shene (I think that's what it's called.....?) - Tandy/LF sells it as do others
