Sharps '68 'Paper cutter' gas plate?
« on: January 28, 2016, 10:48:05 AM »
I have an IAB Sharps Hartford model 'paper cutter'.  I took the breach block out to test the gas plate. I had to use a small screwdriver blade and an exacto blade to pry that thing off.  There was minimal residue inside....but didn't seem enough to jam the plate.  Question is: how tight should the plate fit?  Took a small brass hammer to re-seat the plate.   There have been numerous posts about using an 'O' ring behind it to assist in the gas seal.  Bill

My Two Shiloh '63's are box stock, no 'O' rings. I need to put the block in a padded vise and use two small screwdrivers to pry off the gas plate.
I pack the block chamber with grease when I reassemble it. Whether or not that helps thrust the plate forward is moot. When things bind up, I squirt a little solution between the block and barrel breech.

Berdan's boys did the same thing, even urinating on the blocks to free them. Most ranges frown on this method ..... ;>)

I can't speak for everybody, but I always had problems with shutting down the pumps before the bilges were pumped out.

So, who says they didn't .... ;>)  On the two way range, such niceties go by the board.

I'm trying to imagine the brouhaha if I ever attempted such a fix on one of my locked up '63's .....  I may try it sometime just for the reaction, or at least a simulation thereof.

I think that pretty well answers the question, obvious the plate fits tight!  In the 'seated' position, I can see about a .002-.003 thousands clearance between the receiver and the breech block plate.  As to sticking................whatever works for you!
While we're on the' paper cutters', have you tried the brass powder cases?  I bought one to see how they work, the Pedersoli brand, it fits my IAB but goes in about .004, that's using the standard 'Christmas tree' bullet. The brass 'shell' has a recess for a bullet and the Xmas tree bullet  slops around.

It's a press fit to replace the gas plate in my Shilohs. It shears off the base of any cartridge that exceeds chamber length.

The brass cases are a Pedersoli user product only, to the best of my knowledge. In any case, it sort of defeats the whole idea of a 'paper Sharps', percussion fired rifle.
