Cheetah Fur Holster
« on: January 19, 2016, 07:50:22 AM »
I may have a chance at a small piece of original pre-WWII cheetah fur from a women's coat. Any suggestions on making a holster from it? I am guessing a Slim Jim style would be the most appropriate.

My thoughts would be as a flap covering, I do not recall seeing any fur holsters, but I do remember seeing a picture of a guy in Cheetah Chaps.   Just my $0.02

I wouldn't even entertain the idea...

Using it as a decorative insert might be feasible, but that's 'old' fur and if it were to become a using holster, it would soon be reduced to dried skin.

Furs like the one described aren't rare, not by a long shot - most antique clothing stores and many estate sales have them, and most can't be worn because they weren't stored properly, 'and' because females got far larger than they were during the heyday of the fur coat's popularity, so they're on the 'too small' side.

If you do an insert, make sure you can easily replace it, and keep enough of the pelt to do so.

Scouts Out!

I handled a piece of it and it's surprisingly supple and tough, no dry rot or weakening. I would of course make the body of the holster from standard 9-10oz body and use this as a cover for the outer layer.
