Probably a lot more common than we realize.  I can't see traveling too far by horse before that holster slapping my hip / leg would get painfully tiresome.

Nothing to do with drawing the gun quickly, just a practical solution yo a daily aggravation.

They normally wore them up high so it wouldn't be slapping your leg.

Nice holster. If worn high, a tie-down wouldn't be needed so it must have been worn lower. In CAS I wear crossed belts worn low. I needed tie-downs to keep the belt from coming up with the holster when drawn. If that happened, the whole belt would loosen and drop down off my waist. My tie-downs were a necessity rather than a choice.

Used to ride a little and watched a heck a lot of movies. Everything flaps up and down at a slow gallop. Everything. Took a long time for my tailbone to get calloused.

This holster looks very much like one I saw in a Texas saddle shop back in 1980, it was in a glass case, it caught my eye and in later years I made a copy of what I remembered, it did have rawhide tie downs, the one in the case, and I thought that odd, This is a copy of the one I saw in Texas, the large flap is rare I made it look old and antiqued

The only time I didn't have stuff flap like that was on a Peruvian Paso I got to ride one time. It felt funny riding a small horse, though. James Arness would never have fit on one.
