My father-in-law built his smoker out of an old refrigerator that was solid metal, not plastic. He would throw a handful of soaked hickory chips on what seemed like a fire built with two chopsticks and a wooden match, close that door, and several hours later have a wonderful smoked brisket.

Happy New year,all!

Big changes here. My Boss has been removed, and we're working with a new manager. I'm on call for this weekend, first time in months. New guy is making some improvements to the infrastructure, plus we've got to learn the paperwork side of things now to help him out.

With the loss of two of our dogs, we're adjusting to the new pup and her way of telling us things.

We had pork and kraut last night at midnight at home ::) don't care much to get out with the crazies ::)
I might be slow, but I'm mostly accurate.....

Wrote this up 4-5 years ago, it's so funny how people will believe things with out question.

Nice story, but Uncle Billy wasn't that dumb folks.

In the South there is a tradition of eating Black-Eyed Peas on New years for good luck, the origins of this are a bit murky, I will give the information I have and leave any conclusions to you.  The most common story as to how it started is in late 1864 when William Tecumseh Sherman did his famous March to the Sea from Atlanta to Savanna they of course lived off the land.  The story goes that the Union troops thought of Cow Peas as fit only for livestock feed and left them instead of taking them.   Being glad at their good luck of having these at least to eat the New Years tradition was started to celebrate their good luck.

But there are a couple of things to think about with that one, first, Sherman’s army had thousands of horses that needed fed and forage for them was harder to find than for the men, so why would they ignore that well known source?   But it goes deeper than that, the eating of cow peas on Rosa Hashana the Jewish New Year goes back to Biblical times; in fact it goes back to Egypt.   In the 18th Century there were a fair amount of Sephardi Jews from the Iberian Peninsula who settled in Northern Georgia and may have helped bring this tradition to the Gregorian New year celebration.   At this point it’s hard to know the real truth, but it is food for thought.

There is a lesser known one that says Uncle Billy and his bummers stole all the pecans in Georgia also, so everyone had to have oatmeal pie that year for Christmas instead of pecan pie.  In fact this happened before pecans were introduced from Texas to Georgia, before the rolled oats to make the pie was invented and even later than the first known recipe for pecan pie is documented, (after WWI).

Now I'm not saying I'd want to have had to deal with them but come on, at least get the facts right.

I like black eyed peas in almost any way they can be made.
I lived in Savanna, Ga. for a number of years and nobody seemed to know about the "cow peas" story.
At ACW reenactment I would often carry a ration bag of black eyed peas along with a bag of rice.
The peas cooked up pretty quick and then add the rice. We always called this "Hoppin John".
It was quick, hot and with a few wild onions added, salt and pepper, very tasty.
My best,

Happy new year all!

Things are sort of settling down to (ab)normal here.  Grandmother left this morning, so the house is a little emptier (and by a little, I mean it.  She's only 4'10.  ;)  ).

We seemed to be in a constant loop of evil white stuff.  Get about four inches, have it melt over the next two-three days, and wake up with four more inches the next morning.  All the mountains are white.

Beyond that, the biggest bit of news is my close-to-acquisition of a new gun.  Ordered it last night, so it'll arrive Wednesday, so by the time the state gooberment gets done infringing on rights, I'll have a new Beretta M9(civilian version.  Not the 92.  This model has almost identical markings to the Gov. issued guns.) on the 20th.   ;D  I was surprised our dealer had any in stock.  After San Bernadino, it's pretty much impossible to find any CA-legal guns.  This distributor sold 17,000 AR Mags in one day!

Anyway, here's to a year of good shooting, good times, and God Blessing America.

I thought Ron Popeil was dead, people keep sending me the video floating around,  people, it's a damned contraption to make a simple task using simple tools more complicated.   About as useful as a wing on a Prius, (which I saw the other day.)

Videos are on the side if you want to see a gadget, bet the people who buy them bought pocket fisherman also.    ::)

I bet if you buy in the next 10 minutes, you'll get-not one! Not 2! but 3 for the price of one! Four easy payments! But wait, there's more! Operators are standing by!
