Wear it on the trail for a while?

Seriously, I think a fake aged hat would look ...fake.

Put that sucker on an wear it everywhere, faked hats do look fake, faked clothes look faked.   The clothes, hat and boots will never look right on you anyway unless you wear them and get used to wearing them.

To get your hat headed right way takes a bit of nerve. I would suggest you first get the tea kettle boiling and steam it to the shape you like, then get it wet put it on and watch your favorite tv shows till it's mostly dry. Next step a light spray of water and a dusting of dirt ( clean cat litter will serve) shake off and wear it while you do some thing (shovel snow, mow grass what ever). Don't be real careful of how you store it other then putting on a bed flat, that's bad luck. Smoke from most any thing is good and dirty hands help. A few days of neglect and abuses will make it look real enough. To bad we all can't live in our fanaty!

I'd suggest that MQ's hat condition HERE:

at ~1:10 is about as "used" as any self-respecting man would want.

`Coupla hours in the midday sun mowing the lawn (no tractors allowed), or one elk hunting trip should do it.

Don Nix, that's dandy idea! Can I get in on this as I have one I could part with. It to has plenty of grime left although I tried to clean it up. A small hole it the crown and the liner is near falling out but if you keep it dry it doesn't smell  hardly at all. Oh and it has the old higher crown rather then the new style roper crown most stores here sell.

If it's a good hat you can hand wash it and reblock it when wet, can add some stiffener when dry to help hold some shape.  Take the liner out, hand wash it and put it over a coffee can add some stiffener when dry and put it back in and it will stay where it belongs.   No need for an old beat-up hat to stink.

Of course if it's not a decent hat you'll figure it out real quick, but life is too short to wear crappy hats anyway.

What I don't understand is what is wrong with wearing it?  Is everyone too ashamed to be seen in public wearing a hat?

Same goes for gun leather.  A friend of mine was once admiring my Old West Reproductions holster and belt, and asked what I did to get it to look well broken in like that.  My answer was "Wear it and use it a lot!"

Well in an age where people spend more for a pair of jeans that are supposed to look worn out than a pair with no holes and are a nice dark blue, I guess it's what we can expect.

Heard for 2017 they are going to be selling pick-ups with fake rust and dents on them.   ;D

You know, in my lifetime I've worn out a LOT of pairs of jeans, and none of them ever looked anything like the "pre worn out" ones.

And that is exactly the same results you'll get trying to "age" a hat.   Fake is fake, no matter how you look at it.  I really wish someone would explain what is wrong with just wearing a hat?
