New Uberti Bolt vs. Old
« on: December 17, 2015, 07:33:48 PM »
It would be nice if someone could post photos doing a SxS comparison showing just what was changed. VTI told me that the bolt is the ONLY thing that was changed. True?

Are you talking about from ones a few years ago with the small pin through it compared to the way they are currently made?

The firing pin extension is different also, and there is a firing pin stop wedge in the new ones somewhat similar to an original winchester.

I'll do photos when I get time if someone else doesn't get to it sooner. Been real busy at work lately but I plan to take some apart for their yearly thorough cleaning when I get time.

This illustration is from a '73, but the essential parts are the same:

http://www.taylorsfirearms.com/accessories/parts/uberti-parts-kits/uberti-1873-38-357-bolt-kit.html

Link pin 105 secures the "key" 721 into the bolt.  You have to remove the link pin to drop the key downward which releases the FP extension.  That pin sometimes is super tight and has to be carefully driven out, sometimes it just falls out.

Edit: wait a minute, are you talking about the above change that was several years back, or the new one where the bottom tab is a replaceable piece of spring steel that is pinned into a channel on the bottom of the bolt?

I was referring to the change circa. 2008 - 2009, however I did not know of this OTHER change you speak of!!   :o

The bolt isn't the only thing that changed.  The new one (in Abilene's link) is entirely different; AND, the extractor and firing pin extension are different for the '66 and '73.

Ain't this a HOOT. I replaced an old model 1866 Bolt to the "new" style about 4 or so years ago (?).
Why did I have to replace the bolt you say?

The TAB on the bottom of the bolt had chipped on the edge and was causing hangups and damaging the brass.

FCK,
We all remember how Uberti "enhanced" the Ladle to the '66.  Went from one that was "bullet proof" to a new and improved brake-0-matic.  What a groan.

The enhancements to the Breach Block/Firing Pin Extension were done for a safety improvement.  The old type retaining pin for the extension rod left one with the face as the only thing to stop the rod in an OOB detonation.  New one, much better.  Now there is a
further improvement to lessen the problems of a broken (lots of those these days) cartridge support tab.

Depending on how old your rifle really is, you may only have a little rubbin-n-buffin to do to fit the "new" kit.  One point, the business end of the firing pin still looks like the leading edge of a Bowling Ball and needs to be re-shaped.  The firing Pin Return Spring is still to long and too stiff.  Needs to be shorter and lighter.  Cut it down and make it a mite lighter.
