Are originals (1888) safe with modern shells? I noticed Doc has one for sale in the classifieds here. Also, can the originals be modified to split-load "a la" the Coyote Cap modified repros(1 in the pipe, 1 in the tube)?

I am pretty sure the 1887's are blackpowder only, I think they are for 2 1/2" shells too.  The 1901's are rated for smokeless but they were only chambered in 10ga.

I have an original '87 with a 12 gauge 32" barrel, and it loves BP!  I load 75 gr. FFg GOEX the usual fibre and card wad column and 1 1/16 Oz of shot.  I cut my plastic AA Winchester cases to 2 1/2 and roll crimp 'em, and my MagTek brass cases are already 2 1/2" long.  It's deadly on birds - clay or live.
