Handi 38-55
« on: November 15, 2015, 11:16:24 AM »
OK youz  guyz,
I'm about to come into my "new to me" project rifle.  H & R 1871 Handi-Rifle in 38-55.  Target model, 28 inch barrel w/aftermarket sights.
I haven't actually fondled it yet.  It's onna Stage.  However, I've been thinking awhile (terrible pains).  I know I'm going to re-stock it,
Butt Stock with cheekpiece ala late 1800s.  Fore Stock will either be a full length Mannlicher (spell??), or a Gemmer style stock.  Haven't quite decided yet, which.  Since it's a separate piece, I may make one of each.

So:  How many of your guys have played with the 38-55??  Been at least 10 years since I had one (Hi-Wall) and I don't remember my loads/bullets combinations.  Since I plan to use this rifle in CAS for Frontiersman events, My current plan is to use the EPP UG-36 pistol bullet, as cast (I shoot APP) for short range and something heavier for long range.  Although the little itty bitty bullet may well reach to
100 Yds quite well.

Wadda ya all think on the matter??

Don't have a single shot in 38-55, but my Marlin loves a 250 Big Lube over 47 grains of Olde Eynsford FFFg.

I'm a huge fan of the 38-55. I have a Mini Sharps, Win 1885, Sharps 1875, Marlin 93, A bunch of Winchester 94s and a Ballard......All shoot a load of 9g Unique under a 250 lead bullet with fantastic accuracy and the recoil is like a 22 Magnum.

A fill case of 2F and a 330 grain bullet will easily compete out to 300 yds.

Good Luck with it...Enjoy the trip!
