THE RAT ROD
« on: November 09, 2015, 06:13:46 AM »
First Generation 1851 Navy COLT, third model.
Pietta Cylinder cut down and rechambered to 38 Colt/ 38 Special
Kirst conversion ring with the cylinder setup with the cartridge rims rebated to diminish the normal gap
Barrel relined to .357
and a whole lot of other stuff...........................

Enjoy!

What a great look Hoof!!!
 Much smoother lines .  .  .  .  .   almost a "long cylinder" look.
The conversion guns are the best of the cap gun/cartridge gun era because they ARE hot rod cap guns!!!
How did you regain barrel /cyl clearance? Reduce frame, barrel lug ,both?

Never mind, re-read your post and see that you cut down the cap cyl. instead of using Kirst cyl. (Not enough coffee yet!)

Awesome job!

There is no gap to regain.............
Pietta cylinders are the longest of the Italians.

When you install a liner you can set the cylinder gap as needed. You can also remove material from either end of the cylinder (face or ratchet) on a lathe. Of course all of these things have consequences!

Hope this answers your question (if I understood you correctly)!

That thing is just the coolest! I love the lines on the Open Top type revolvers. They're just elegant. Colt definitely wins the Cap 'n Ball & Conversion era for me.

I did a chamber re-size to .38 S&W on my Pietta so called 1862 Police (actually a short barreled 1861) using a Pacific Tool and Die cylinder reamer. Be sure to specify pilot bearing to match the existing cylinder chamber throat. The conversion cylinder is from R&D in .38 S&W Special. I use .363 LRN bullets from MattsBullets.com over 16grs. 3Fg. Works very well at NCOWS matches with pistol targets at 12-15 yard distances.
