Bought an M&H today !
« on: October 07, 2015, 08:28:58 PM »
Funny how things grow on you..... I remember seeing a Merlin at my gunsmith buddies place years ago and thinking " Boy is this thing ugly."

20 years later(today)....... I bought a medium frame spur trigger first model .38 - go figure! Can't wait to tear it down and go shoot it !

Congratulations.  Unlike you, the first time I saw a Merwin Hulbert (pictures in a Mike Venturino article), I thought they were amazingly beautiful pieces of engineering.  Many years later, this landed in my lap.

I would love a large frame one day, but it will have to take a miracle.

That's a nice one - and in great shape too! I don't know if I'll restore mine or just have fun with it and shoot it. I'd love a large frame also, but they're getting pretty pricey these days.

I would leave it alone and enjoy as is.

This is an image of my mid size framed MH, DA in.38 cal. S&W "short".
SKJ, This is "almost" identical to the revolver you posted. Mine has the folding hammer spur. (I also have the 6" barrel for this revolver.)

Very nice, Blair. Any problems with shooting yours? I have a couple boxes Remington .38 S&W coming in to try out.

Yes, the later versions have a folding hammer.  Mine is a 7-shot in .32 MH with very low serial number in the early 400's.  I'm told those grips are ultra rare.

You've got a nice example there.

Tommy,

No! I have been loading BP .38 S&W "short" for my S&W DA  4th, Model for a long time now.
That revolver also has a 6" barrel for it too.
The top revolver is a very early New Model #3 in .44 Russian (extractor rod housing is slightly longer than the standard New Models)
The problem comes when I put the long barrels on them. In some shooting groups, they are no longer considered "pocket pistol/revolvers"

OK cool - I'm going to use the brass from the Remington stuff to load some BP for mine. It appears there are plenty of bullets for 38 S&W available......

Tommy,

A friend of mine has a .32 S&W spur trigger single action, seven shooter like you posted.
It has no loading gate, jus a hole in the recoil shield for loading the revolver.
Another friend has is a mid size DA frame in .38 S&W, two barrel set with the skull crusher grip.
Both are very cool!

I think I'm going to be very happy with this little Merwin..... Initially I wanted a big one but that would mean another caliber for me to keep straight. 38 I already fool around with for my Colt and Remington cartridge conversions. And I understand hollow base soft .357s will substitute for .361s in a pinch.
I really wanted the MH just for the way it works. I'm a keep my eyes open for a little 32 as I already load that caliber for the SW 1.5 and 49 conversion.

It's getting hard to keep all this stuff straight :-)
