Hi I came across this src in bad condition. I finally made out the sn it is 9004 can you tell me anything about it?

Oldfard gave me 9004 and listed it as a carbine . . . but 9005 is a Spencer rifle . . . Oldfard re-check the serial # . . . sometimes they are hard to read correctly.

Barrel length, and of course caliber of the barrel bore are important things to consider.
I think both Spencer as well as Burnside started with SS# 01 in the M1865's

Another possibility is a rifle rebarreled or cut down to carbine length and saddle ring added. Think of all the mods to war
surplus done here in the US since the end of WW2.

I have been Emailing back and forth with OldFard, the OP, his Spencer Carbine? serial # is 9004. Waiting on more photos and will post them when I receive them.

Hi fellows,

It's me trying to get you some information about Spencer. Will try to get some pictures to Two Fints and he can post them.

SN is 9004 real rusty had to go under rust to find it. BBL is marked real nice 9004. BBL is 20 inches long. Hang in there iI will get more info to you.

I would say your Spencer Carbine is a Burnside contract of an M-1865.
I say this due to what appears to be a four line address on the top of the receiver.

No history on the spencer. I live in Miami Ok and we have eleven tribes of Indians. Lots of history. will get more pictures soon.

If you buy a center fire converson do you have to use blackpower in the bullets? What is a good converson?

This is just my opinion...
These arms contain the pressure of the fired ammo within the barrel/chamber area, which, in turn screws into the receive ring.
It is important to note that during the production life of these arms, there was only one powder (black powder) available as a propellant powder.
I would highly suggest that this is the only powder used in these older arms (pre-Smokeless powder development).
Another factor to consider is the overall condition of the firearm.

I have to tell you that I was ready to suggest you hang this "old girl" on the wall and forget shooting it.
However, after viewing the images of some of the internal parts and their condition, I am willing to reconsider that thought.
The muzzle end of the bore is kind of rough as it is now, Could it be cleaned up some?

Setting one of these up to shoot could be a very expensive proposition.
Just to be able to shoot it a couple of time may simply not be an option for you?
I have not kept up with the current cost, But, this is the place to find that out.

I got the bbl and chamber cleaned up mostly chamber. Bought some starlite brass made from 50 70 for the 56 50 taylor spencer.
The thickness of the rim is too thick. This is original burnside rough spencer I am trying to load for. What can I do? Is there other kinds of brass?

The cut down 50-70 case rims can be a bit oversized for most of the original Spencer rim fire type cartridge cases. I am kind of surprised this was not done for you when you placed your order for 56-50 brass.
How many cases did you get?
