Hey Bob thought I post photos of the knife pointy things I've got in my collection.  Oh and I've got the items these all attach to, except the last one.   ;D

Looks to me like beginning with the M-9, they decided to make something that was primarily useful as a knife, that could also be attached to a rifle, unlike the earlier ones that were designed as a weapon for the end of a rifle, and any real usefulness as a knife was pretty much by accident...

Yes! But do you really think it actually started with the M9? Or was there......... maybe............ a much earlier US bayonet that was much the same type of blade as those last three? ;)

Well, there's the Krag Bowie bayonet-but it seems for some reason they didn't catch on too well. Regular Krag bayonets, and most of the Springfield variations that followed were way to thick to make a good knife.

Side note: I have found one good use for a Krag bayonet-when I make firewood out of thorny locust trees, it works well to skin the thorns off it, so I don't get poked feeding the fire.

Oh that is a fine collection of bayonets there!

Well, there's the Krag Bowie bayonet-but it seems for some reason they didn't catch on too well.

Look at the end of my Krag in the avatar ;) They are a great field knife, but I wouldn't want to use it for it's purpose as an entrenching tool!!

They should'a had Rambo movies back then-then they'da caught on! We called the M9 a "Rambo Bayonet"! That thick blade snapped off the hollow handle too easily and the Marines deep six'd it. The latest Marine bayonet pictured there is very sharp out of the box and virtually grunt proof-at the cost of being very heavy!

Personally, I like the M5, 6 and 7. They are tough as nails and light. Not as "cool" as the earlier or later ones tho :D

Yes, I noticed you don't have a lot of trees out that way-gotta burn what you got! ;D

Oh, we got a lotta trees! I'm in Missouri, not Nebraska. It's just that the darn things tend to take over the world around here, so-if I gotta keep cutting them, might as well burn them! But really, I think if I had a little dozer, or a bobcat(with tracks) I'd just cut the things and push them up in a big burn pile, and then go cut some oak for firewood. Have to have something with tracks, those thorns make short work of tractor tires!

That's not common right in my immediate area( I don't think). What we got here is plain old thorny locust. Good for nothing except drawing blood, making flat tires, and, if you take time to skin the thorns off, firewood. Try to actually use the wood for anything, it'll be full of worm tunnels within a year.
