Gunsmith 1872 0pen top
« on: July 19, 2015, 03:28:54 AM »
Howdy!
I have an Uberti 1872 open top in 44 colt. I wonder if it can be opened up to take 44 spl.? Due to a manufacturing issue I can not make a new 44 spl. cylinder work. Any thoughts on who would be good to do it?

If your cylinder doesn't already accept 44 Spcl rounds (older ones did not), then yes, it can easily be reamed to .44 Spcl.  Used to do that regularly at Cimarron.

Thanks for the information. I have three of these and this one has a special problem. It is the first one I got, maybe fifteen years ago. I am not sure but suspect the problem. I have a lot of mic's for work, depth, outside etc. after much looking I found the arbor hole coned out from the rear about half way. I am the original owner/ bought it new back when. I shoot a Yellow Boy in 44 spl. and would like to save this. I have a 44 spl. cylinder I bought for it but it won't work, just jams. I thought about cone ing it out but not so easy for me. Thought's, idea's or gunsmith information would be appreciated.

The cylinder jams? It will need fitting, is it on cocking touching the face of the barrel.

From the factory the arbor hole in the rear of the cylinder has been ground or machined larger than the front of the cylinder, about halfway through the cylinder arbor hole. It allows the rear of the cylinder to move keeping it from jamming. I'm figuring.
