Older CH pistol die question
« on: July 16, 2015, 05:22:36 PM »
I got my hands on a nice set of CH dies.  The dies are marked as follows:

Sizer
Crimp Seater
NO 3

The question is:  What is the NO 3 die?

The sizer has a decapper pin and cone for inside neck sizing.  The crimper/seater has a general round nose stem.

But the NO 3 has no stem in the die. Sooooo, if it is supposed to be the case mouth expander die then it is missing the expander plug.

Thanks for any information or help.  I have searched the net for anything about this die but found nothing definitive.

Wildman what type of crimper would it be, that then, would be different from the die marked as a crimper/seater?

The caliber is 41 LC.

Does the first die expand the mouth enough to seat a cast bullet?  If not and most likely, then you are missing the expander button.

As I remember (been a while since I used a set of C&H) the expander die was seperate and that die should be threaded for it.

Reading through the literature online from the company, they don't mark the expander dies with specific caliber markings since they use the same die body for many calibers.  They then provide caliber-specific expanding plugs to fit the dies.  I agree with Delmonico.  If it appears to be threaded, it is probably just missing the plug.

Not a difinitive answer, but an educated guess.

I think the generic die bodies came in different lengths, for differing size ranges of cartridges. The "3" probably indicates one of the body sizes.

Del, you are correct, after sizing  and extracting, that inside neck plug leaves the inside diameter at 0.386.  Not at 0.387 for easy bullet insert.  The NO 3 die does have inside threads.

Coal, I did read the CH4D website and did not find anything that defined this die.  The die code table did not list a NO 3 designation.  That and the fact that it has an inside neck sizing stem (which the new dies do not have) is why I believe these are older CH model dies.

I truly was hoping that someone had access to the older CH code tables that defined the NO 3 designation.

I knew you wanted a definitive answer, but everyone else was guessing and I didn't want to miss out ;).

Thanks for all the comments and ideas.  This die, right now, is not that important to me because the only mold I have is the heel-based bullet.  That is not saying that maybe some day, I could come across an inside lube mold, I could afford then needing the expander die.

I just wanted to understand what I bought and received -- and/or -- have or did not have.
