new shooter with "long range" question
« on: June 11, 2015, 02:24:24 AM »
I don't have a long range lever action rifle, and was wondering if anybody knew if the Winchester Legendary Frontiersman 38-55, or the Marlin 336 Cowboy 38-55 is on the "approved" or "disapproved" list? I'm not real sure after reading the Tally Book.

Most of the gang are at the nationals....

let me see what I can do...  We are talking long range side match here ..NOT MAIN MATCH  :)

The .38-55 cartridge was designed in 1884 by Ballard Rifle & Cartridge Company - it's in

As Designed by John Browning in 1894 the Winchester Model 94 would be approved
....with further details on the Winchester Legendary Frontiersman 38-55 , I'd allow perhaps.....further review necessary

Marlin 336 Cowboy 38-55 - is a  No .... the round bolt and ejection port profile will preclude it .

I don't know if it's changed but commemeratives didn't used to be allowed.

If the Legendary Frontiersman is an "Angle Eject" 1894 it is not allowed.  Quick Fire is correct generally Commemoratives are not allowed.  I am not sure about Major 2's determination on the 336 Marlin.  I will talk to the current Judge and the Authenticity Committee later today and have the Judge get back to you.

Thanks guys,

I wasn't sure about either rifle.

-The Legendary Frontiersman because of the "commemorative coin/disc inlaid in the stock.
-The Marlin because of the 336 action.

I see Midway USA sells a plain Winchester stock set. Would that cure the "commemorative" problem of the Winchester?

Course it is no longer my house to haunt  :-\

But as far as I can see the Winchester Legendary Frontiersman 38-55 is not a Winchester AE - Angle Eject

As far as commemeratives are concerned , I believe a simple medallion in the stock , could be replace or even over looked

I believe the ruling was meant to dismiss  heavy embellished models of like ...Mount Rushmore commemeratives
or  Union Pacific Railroad  or Buffalo Bill  Commemeratives  73's

Example: Uberti made 200  UBERTI COMMEMORATIVE /HENRY RIFLE-- GEN. LEE & HIS GENERALS

I know the marlin 336 round bolt is unapproved

Sorry,  I have been at the Nationals all week.  Met and talked with the Authenticity Committee and we have determined that both of these guns would not be legal.  The Winchester Legendary 38-55 is a commemorative.  It is engraved as such on the barrel.
The Marlin 336 because of the round bolt and ejection port.
Again I am sorry it has taken me so long to get to you.  Mike Owen NCOWS Judge

Bushwacker, hope you had a great time at the Nationals!

Thanks for the determination on the rifles. This saves me from making an expensive mistake!

I've got "main match" gear though, and am looking forward to shooting my first match this coming Sunday with the newly chartered Sweetwater Regulators in Wisconsin.

Flatbush,  I had a great time at the Nationals.  Good luck at your first NCOWS shoot.  It will be a first rate match with Johnny McCrae involved.  He and Two Bit Charlie are two of the best.  Bushwhacker.
