Question about 1871 Open Top

I recently purchased 2 1871 early model Open Tops by Cimmeron (sp).  If I remove the hammer safety will the pistols fire OK?

So far I have 6 matches with one pistol and 1 with the other and have really enjoyed them.

I have had two and neither had the safty ciomplete, the plungers were missing or never fitted.

Yes, you can remove them.  I am assuming you would want to do this so they don't accidently fold forward into the "safe" position during a match.  You can also just loctite them into place to accomplish the same thing.  With the safety removed, the hammer looks normal when down, but when cocked you see the holes in the hammer.  Doesn't really bother me, as I removed those safeties from my Richards-Masons.

I took them out of my 71s & haven't had any issues at all.

In the past, when I had "customers" (being retired is swell), I found removing the "fold over safety" left a real ugly hole in the hammer.  Didn't hurt it, just looked, ugly.  So, for my customers, as well as my own CAS Open Tops, I took the hammer safety apart, cleaned everything real well, wiped it all down with a little alcohol and applied RED LocTite liberally and put it all back together.  Never moved again.

My Dear Coffinmaker -
If one were handy, could one remove the offending bits and fill in the holes with a TIG, without affecting the rest of the hammer?

It is a mother big hole.  To fill it, a lot of "weld."  then cleaning up, then stress relieving, heat treating, then ......... Nah.  Skip the weld idea.  Not gonna be real practical.  Be easy to cut the hammer in half trying to fill that much hole.  I like to keep a "fix" simple.  Over thinking a relatively simple solution will usually cost you money.  Think KISS.

Prof, take my work for it.  Retirement isn't all wonderful and roses.  First, you don't have to ask anyone for time off.  Then, you discover your "weekend" starts on Monday and runs until Friday.  Too many loons out on Saturday and Sunday.  Stay home.  You'll soon wonder what an alarm clock "was."  Mow the lawn whenever you feel like it ..... or not.  I could continue, but some things are best kept .........

I have a gun with one I took out and as Coffinmaker said, the recess is huge. I consider it my Commander style skeletonized speed hammer!!

Thanks for all the reply's.  I'm not sure if I'll lock tight it or remove it and fill it with JB Weld as Tom Horn suggested to me, but I know my options now.

Seein' this post that RRW resurrected caused a thought to pop into my head (quick!  write it down before it pops back out!).

I'm thinking this safety feature is an import requirement, as is the two-position base pin on SAA's, etc.

And if so, I wonder if these Uberti guns sold in Europe have the same safeties??
