Gun broke again!
« on: May 25, 2015, 07:30:47 PM »
My reputation is holding up!  I was just out shooting my New Service .45 and the firing pin broke.  You'd think a Colt would hold up.  After all, it's only ninety-eight years old!

Never break the easy ones, do ya.  Some folks might be satisfied with some pot metal BP topbreak, but Ned has got ambition!

That's just it!  I only SHOOT the nice ones!  Popperts supposedly has the firing pin, so I'll check tomorrow.

Incidentally, my list of broken guns (so far) is as follows:  Remington 870, M1 Garand, Glock 21, Remington 11, M1A, Ruger Vaquero, Ithaca S X S, SAA (replica), and now a New Service.  No lightweights for me!

Anyone want to let me shoot their guns at the Muster?! .................Anyone?

Maybe we need to fix you up with a matchlock musket.... Your list already includes some of the toughest guns made(M-1, Glock, Vaquero) How about a Mosin next? So far your Rolling Block seems to be surviving (what is there, 4 moving parts and a couple of springs?)

I sold the rolling block before I could break it.

They're all fixed now, and some of them have moved on.  I've got to fix this New Service to use at the Muster in June!  Bad timing!

...and some of them have moved on.

Yeah, I still say that you broke the sight on the Spencer. It just didn't actually fall off until after I got it!

That Is quite an impressive list by the way. How do you break a Garand or a Garand variant?  ::)

My list only includes: Highpoint pistol, Trapdoor, Henry, Thompson, SAA, and the above mentioned Spencer and usually only involves  a sight falling off.

Mostly I just have a habit of accidentally buy things that are already broke. Like a '97 Winchester, I got it to feed but quit before I got it to eject.... the Kropatchek with the broken cartridge lifter spring (try finding one of THOSE!). And not the least, the 1892 Colt, with the cracked barrel....and timing problems...And then I topped it off by breaking one of it's many oddball springs re-assembling it.

This of course doesn't include C&B revolvers, whose motto seems to be "If you shoot them, they will break"

I fully agree with the cap & ball fragility.  At one time I think I could disassemble and reassemble a Colt pattern cap & ball because I replaced so many springs.

I had no idea just how rare New Service firing pins evidently are.  I just had to buy a whole hammer!  (Hope that works!)

My brother broke a crowbar one time. ;D

He bought a broke Ruger M77, but I fixed that.   LOL, was a 220 Swift and he got it cheap cause it wouldn't feed.    ::)

Did you try this guy?  http://www.coltparts.com/pt_newservice.html

I've gotten good service in the past from him, and he's usually got the small parts.  Might be handy if the timings not right on the new hammer.

Good to know!  I thought they were out of business.  (Goes to show what thinking does for me.)  I bought the hammer from Gun Parts.  I have this fantasy that it will be as nice as the one in the picture!

Here's what you need, Ned!
NO moving parts!

I'm sure if it goes "bang" Ned would find a way to break it.  ;D
