Freund Sharps
« on: April 06, 2015, 05:10:18 PM »
My buddy builds these Freund's Improved Sharps and I do the color case for him. He told me today that he has some 1874 Sharps actions that he thinks he'll sell They are receiver, lock plate, lever and trigger plate. Nothing else but the rest can be got from other sources. If interested I can find out the price, it won't be the cheap way to have a standard Sharps but the first step to a custom one.

Kent Shootwell,

I find this to be very interesting as well.

As for the missing parts and pieces... who is the suggested manufacture for these parts?

The Freund "improvements" were the breech block was made to tip. As the action was closed the block would cam forward to press the cartridge into the chamber. Note the screw on the side above the word Boss, this held the wedge that engaged the  bevel on the top of the breech block. Other details aren't as important. The breech bock and cam plate are in the top right of this photo.

Blair, the other parts can be bought from Taylors. Pedersoli parts won't work. These actions still need some machine work on the extractor slot and lever spring opening. The corners inside the breech block opening is radiused so that can be squared up or the breech block corners rounded to match. As such no FFL is required. I miss stated before there isn't a trigger plate but there are screws, bridle, receiver, lock plate and lever. These require machine skills to finish unless you are very good with files and understand how to build a 1874 Sharps! I have no dog in this hunt, I only post tis as I've seen people wonder about building their own.

Herbert, The Spencer is a original that had been messed up at one time (note the marks near the front) and was being brought back to life with a new barrel and stock amongst other repairs. I'm not aware of any modified parts, I'm not a student of Spencer rifle, would you point out what you noticed?

The top of the frame has been cut away for some reason, maybe in a effort  to lighten the action

Thanks Herbert, I see what you're pointing out.  I'll ask the gunsmith that was working on it if he knows.

Check the firing pin length and the bushing in the breechblock closely. Some of those are a bit generously sized, and will suck primer material off the spent primers, and after a handful of rounds will cause irratic accuracy, much like a broken firing pin in an unmodified sharps.

Yes it is Rich.

That's what I thought.  Outstanding work.  My shooting partner has one ordered.  I'd like to get one of my Shilohs converted, but I'm told he doesn't do that anymore.
