Phil Collins and the Alamo need our help!
« on: February 17, 2015, 12:35:30 PM »
I just read an interesting article in "True West" magazine about the rock star, Phil Collins and his amazing Alamo collection. He is donating the whole collection to the Alamo. Worth $15 Million! And he will help build a new museum at the Alamo to house it. He has Jim Bowie's knife, Dave Crockett's possibles bag and his rifle! And much more.
Donations are requested to help build the museum. You can help out here:

Neither of the links worked for me, . . . both came up as unavailable.

May God bless,

Before anyone writes a check or turns an ignition key to head south - you 'might' want to do a little digging, first - just to see the wide disparity in the reporting of this 'story' and the almost complete lack of provenance.

To Texans - and to much of the world - 'The Alamo' borders on the edge of 'Holy Relic' status, and many, many fakes abound.

Therefore, anything associated with such a site must have iron-clad provenance before being placed in a museum dedicated to the public interest and education.

Too many 'True Believers' have been sold lies and bought them willingly - 'just' like those who collect Confederate relics and Texas Ranger artifacts do, today.

Too many 'personages' with too much money, too little time, and too much enthusiasm have long been viewed as prey by those charlatans, so take this with a grain of salt, and remember that they've been looking for Bowie's knife for a 'very' long time, now - to say nothing of anything 'provably' known to have been Crockett's - both to no avail.

Anything left on that battlefield was treated just like the battlefields of Europe - bodies were stripped and everything was looted by the survivors for later use, sale or trade.

Scouts Out!

Agree. Jim Bowie's knife was a big red flag for me. Collins might have a great collection but I would need a lot of convincing about the knife.

In The Sun Of The Morning Star by Evan Connell he states that the Souix and Cheyenne did not know that it was Custer who they had defeated  that day. The victors took everything that they could as trophy and booty and moved on. At the Alamo, weapons and clabber would have been collected and removed. It's just too good to be true that Jim Bowies knife, not his boot or belt buckle, his very knife and Davy Crocketts rifle are all preserved and together. The thing is we WANT it to be true. The Mormon letters from a few years back, the Hitler Dairies from before that are all examples of Provenance that was not checked. In fact they were proclaimed as genuine and then the questions started.

Has no one with expert knowledge looked at and verified the provenance of the items. Many items might be genuine, I hope they are, but the big items, knife and rifle, deserve to be proved or disproved as the real thing.
