Brules by Harry Combs
« on: February 08, 2015, 11:58:47 PM »
If you have not read this book and have any love for the Old West then do yourself a favor and order it from Amazon today.  I am reading it for the fifth time.  It is in fact my favorite novel ever and I have read over 1500 books in my sixty-four years.  There is a sequel entitled The Scout  which is nearly as good. These books should be made into a TV miniseries.  I must have given away ten copies of this book to friends in the last fifteen years.  The late author Trevanian once wrote: "A book's a great place to hide out in."  If that is so then Brules  is the ultimate hideout.

Here is part of a review that was done a while back:

Brules began as a story Combs told to his grandchildren and grew into this sprawling, impeccably researched historical novel about freedom and our nation's past. It is a work so grand in scope and scale, so filled with brutality and violence, heroism and tenderness, it will take your breath away. Brules is written in fire and blood; it is tougher than Lonesome Dove, richer than Jack London, and better than any of them.

"We should come home from afar,  from adventures and perils and discoveries every day, with new experiences and character." - Henry David Thoreau

I took your advice and checked out this book from the library.  I am about a 1/3 of the way through and it is very good.

The whole series is IMO very well done. It's especially enjoyable since I live only about 50 miles from Lone Cone in SW Colorado where much of the later story takes place.

I finished Brules last week. A truly wonderful book. I have just started The Scout and hope it is as interesting. It will be hard to beat Brules.

I finished the book last weekend and I highly recommend it!
Being the nit-picky gun nut that I am, I did notice that the author was overestimating the ballistics of the 44 Henry rimfire.  I was not familiar with the 38 S&W's revolver Brules carried, so I did some quick research and I think the author should have used a .32cal No.2 Army.

I reserved "The Scout" and am looking forward to reading it next.

I'm having no luck with Brules. I ordered it twice in the last few months. First time a detective novel arrived, second time no novel arrived. Got my money back but it's turned into a quest now. Ordered it again last night so I hope third time is the charm.

It took the library two weeks to find a copy for me, it is worth it though.  I am about half way through "The Scout" now.

Did you order it from Amazon?  I got a copy for a friend a few weeks ago and had no problem.

Amazon yes, but from their smaller book suppliers. Amazon could not have been more efficient.....sent me label for free postal return and returned my money. Second time the supplier apologised and said it must have been lost in the post. He also returned the money very promptly but wanted me to take down the negative customer rating. Not sure about that. Like I said its ordered again, due this week. Jeez...it better be good.

OK.........I give up. I thought I had found a copy of Brules by Harry Combs but no luck. So far I have been sent 2 copies of Threat Case, 1 lost in the post (don't believe that), one assurance that it was on the self but when sought there was a gap where Brules should be, and today an email telling me that where Brules should be, is a book called The Dirty Duck. All the dealers have the ISBN correct but the wrong book.

Some day as I'm browsing in a book shop waiting for her-in-doors, there it will be, shining like the Holy Grail wiring for me.

There is still hope.  If you wait until the year 2045 it will probably show up as a classic on Project Gutenberg and it won't cost you anything.  I feel guilty that I've caused you so much frustration.  Keep trying.  Be assured that it will be well worth all of the trouble.

Ike thanks for that, and Sir Charles I don't get the different ISBN's. I thought an ISBN was unique to one title, one author. I'm gonna stick my neck out and say.......NOOOOOOO

An ISBN is assigned to each edition and variation (except reprintings) of a book. For example, an ebook, a paperback, and a hardcover edition of the same book would each have a different ISBN.

ISBN issuance is country-specific, in that ISBNs are issued by the ISBN registration agency that is responsible for that country or territory regardless of the publication language. The ranges of ISBNs assigned to any particular country are based on the publishing profile of the country concerned, and so the ranges will vary depending on the number of books and the number, type, and size of publishers that are active.

There is an advantage in talking to the vendor personally. If you find a book on abebooks, the vendor has already paid a fee so you can go to the vendor and make your own arrangements. Like getting the book off his shelf to make sure it is what you want.

Chuck, that might go some way to explaining my plight. It's just that the websites say they have it, the number is right, but the book ain't. Sir Charles, that has been my ploy on my last 2 attempts. They are helpful and phone or email back but they still don't have the book, despite advertising it and the price. I'll let you know if I ever find it. Mr.Combs would be annoyed.
