Possible Move to SW Oregon. Is it Gun Friendly? CAS Available?

Deb and I are both retired with no kids hoping to move to the Eugene/Springfield/Oakridge area in the next year.  We will look for a place with some acreage out in the country.  What is the situation there regarding firearm ownership, concealed carry and shooting ranges.  Is there any CAS or muzzleloading activity in the area?  Do any folks out there wear cowboy hats in general?  I've got seven or eight of them and like to wear one occasionally here in Colorado.  I wouldn't want folks in Oregon to see me coming and say: "Look, here comes a hat.  We're a quiet couple (not Californians) and promise to be good neighbors.

From the nature of your questions, it sounds like you'd be well advised to rent a place there for half a year before committing to the move.  The climate -- both culturally and meteorologically -- are unique to the place.  You ought to experience that for yourself before plunking down the gold.

I lived in Oregon for 12 years, back in the 60's and 70's, and it is one of the best places I've ever lived.  It is an outdoorsman's paradise.  But, if you use the weather as an excuse to sit on the sofa (as my Grandfather used to say), then the rocking chair will get you sooner rather than later.

If Oregon is anything like British Columbia, besides being in a different country, there will be a large difference in attitude between the coastal and university cities and the ranching interior.

Quotes from JeffinTD and Sir Charles sounds like most of the US. Most of the major cities, especially where some of the left leaning universities exist are the strong holds of left, socialistic, communistic teachings and beliefs. Take a look at any map showing the voting patterns the last 35-40 years, the so called red and blue zones/states-the east and left coasts attitudes.

I love Oregon and was born there, still catch flack from transplants when I go back to visit relatives   Eugene is more liberal since that is the home of Oregon State.  When you had said SW Oregon, I was thinking that you were looking at Medford/Ashland area.  There are quite a few clubs down in that area. 

Sir Charles is dead on about the Weather West of the Cascades (I'm from the East Slope), adapt to it and things are great.  As for gun friendly, most of the state is really cool about it.

If you get into the Eastern side, sometimes you can blink and think that you are in a Remington print.

I'd move back, except having 17 years into a job with decent pay and good benefits. it's kinda hard to uproot the family and start over unless absolutely necessary.

Having spent a majority of my life in the land of fruits and nuts and focusing on Eastern Oregon, I never really paid attention to which bastion of liberalism was in which city.   Given my druthers, I'd be Headed for Jordan Valley or Burns rather than the I-5 corridor.  And you are right, i should have remembered that OSU is in Corvallis since I was accepted there for Undergrad work 20+ years ago.  My mistake, can I blame it on surgery recovery?

That's true of California, too, and look what that led to.
