Finally got to shoot my 45-75
« on: January 24, 2015, 05:51:28 PM »
Well boy's, I finally got my 76 out today, and what a pleasure it was to shoot! I only shot at 50 yards, and mostly for fireforming the brass, as the rifle has the Uberti chamber. Also shoot some APP powder in 348 brass, and that was the worse accuracy wise. I tried several different powders, 4758, 4198, 5744, 2400, and 3031. All had a pinch of TP filler with the exception of the 5744. All shot a hair to the left. Now  that the brass has been fireformed to the chamber I can start testing in earnest. The 348 brass was shot before, and was difficult to close the lever, so I probly wont use them again, unless needed. All in all I was very happy with the rifle and am looking forward to more shooting.

King; If the .348 loads were a bit hard to close the lever, could it be that the rims are thicker than the other cases?

When there is relatively little to "fire-form", like here, I think that a separate fire-forming stage is a waste of components. Use those loads for a purpose. You will probably find that while groups might be a bit more consistent after fire-forming, that the results will be fairly representative of what the rifle can accomplish.

I agree. The 5744 and 2400 looked the most promising today, I will build on that to start with.

That is one heavy rifle to shoot offhand! Recoil was hardly noticeable, but I've never been bothered by recoil much, I'm a fairly big fella. My main worry was the filler loads. This was the first time in 35 years of reloading that I used a filler. I used toilet paper, a pinch a tad bigger than my thumb. I think it worked out well. There was very little leading. All bullets were 350 grain FP from Laser Cast. I would shoot 6 rounds on paper target, go look at target, shoot a couple cylinders of 357 mags, (just got a OM Ruger Blackhawk yesterday), then my son would shoot 6 rounds on paper, go look, then shoot the rest at steel gongs 75 to 100 yards out. DING DING DING! Love this rifle! I'll try to get a video or pic on here soon.

How did resting the magazine tube on the front rest work out for you?  With a field rifle, as opposed to a target rifle, I try to hold the forend with my hand, and rest my hand on a bag.  You might try a few things until you get a really good result.

I have a NWMP carbine in .45-75 and you are correct, Sir! The recoil is very manageable.

Never gave it a thought. Didn't have any trouble, but next time out I'll try resting on the forestock.

One of the reasons that I hold the fore end then rest my hand on the bag is that I've been told that it doesn't alter the point of impact from a natural hunting hold as much.

Very windy yesterday, but went out anyway, cleanse the soul. Here are a couple targets, only at 25 yards. Next outing will be 50 yards.

These were 5744 powder, virgin Jamison brass, so was really just fireforming for effect, but golly this is something to build on.

if it was all shot with one sight setting, it indicates vertical stringing.  Watch your front sight carefully, and maintain a uniform hold.

King Medallion-

I do not shoot a 45-75... But I do shoot the Uberti '76 Centennial Rifle in 45-60 w/28" barrel.  Using a 350 grain RNFP cast bullet sitting on top of 22 grains of 2400 and a pinch of TP as filler.  This load is very good in my rifle for shooting at 200 yards. For the smokeless loads it is a very good load. Works well for me.

The 1st pic is actually of second target, 10 shots. The 2nd pic is of first target shot, 6 shots. Probly a good 1/2 hour between each other. Like I said, it was very windy, more or less wind was at my back. And I make no claims to being a good shot, but I thought it looked pretty darn good.

;D I would not stand down range of you, for sure.
With buckhorns I have always had a problem in the wind, my eyes tear, and it's hard to hold a consistent sight.  Ever run into that problem?

A couple of good points here. :)  I apologize for trying to coach by computer/remote control. ;D

Time to get a tang sight. They are much easier for old eyes to resolve.

It is pretty darn good shooting.  Shooting @ 25 and 50 yards  a buckhorn will be plenty good for one hole groups if your eyes are up to it.  Plenty of potential in your gun load and shooting to get there just the way it is.

If anything I would get your rest under the receiver/forearm if possible and be very careful about canting your rifle.  My guess it is canted off to the left a tiny bit.  Good shooting just takes practice.

Yep, my eyes were tearing up bit in the wind. My eyes are 51 years old. It may come to it, but I will hold off on a tang sight as long as possible. I just don't like them. mostly because they sit right where my hand goes.

I use a Lyman #2 on my Uberti '66 competition rifle and if there was any interference with my hand I never noticed it. A peepsight eliminates the most troublesome focal point for our old eyes to resolve and is well worth it. On the '66 I took out the sight insert and it makes a very fast and reliable sight system.
