Missing primers

My friend called me up yesterday who is new to reloading all worried. He found at least 6 once used cases out of a 100 that had no primers. They are 357 mag remmington cases. He was using 125 gr cast bullets and a light load of trail boss. Could have been fired in a 1873 winchester or a ruger vaquero. I have never noticed this in all the years I have been reloading.

An unusually light load, in combination with generous headspace, would cause this.
Is your friend using load information for the .38 special in those larger cases by chance?

Were the cases originally loaded by your friend? Does he remember a few cases where he had an issue seating primers. Possibly swaged the pocket if that happened and primers were lose after firing.
