Love these.

Update on the "project".

New Winchester with full mag, 26" Hex, TD, CB, pistol grip here now.  Rebounding hammer changed out and solid hammer installed, tang safety removed.  Welding up the hole in the tang, rechambering it to 45-90 and cutting the barrel to 22" later this week.

So????? What happened?? Your last posting on this custom project was back in Jan. !! Did you cut the barrel down? What's it look like? Did you keep the mag tube even with the barrel or do a " button" mag?? Inquiring minds want to know!!! ;D Johnny F

This thread turned into three projects.  All less ambitious than the pistol griped '76.

#1 Bought the new take down pistol grip Winchester to turn into a 22' shot gun butt rifle.  That is in the works now.  Lots of detailing, color case, shot gun butt and more.  But duplicating the gun shown above for the most part.

#2 Have a 20" 'full mag '76 in 45-75 that I am restocking now with a shotgun butt and nice checkered wood.  My favorite lever gun to date.  This is in the works now.

#3 And since I now will have a wood pattern for the '76 :)  I am building a straight stocked, shot gun butt, button mag, checkered,  22" match grade pencil barrel in 40-60 1876 to mimic Roosevelt's favorite '76.  This one will have some engraving as well.   I expect a lot from this one.  I am waiting on the base rifle to get started.

Should look a lot like this but with a straight stock:

Now the only issue seems to be living long enough so I might enjoy the finished projects!

I'll need another rack in my office.  1st world problems.

Looks like you need a nice, or several nice fellows to store and shoot your rifles for you.  It pains me, but I could probably see fit to hold on to a couple of them for a few years, like 40 ;D

Thanks Matt,
I built that nickel plated '73 twenty five years ago now.

The '76 I have put just shy of 1500 rounds of smokeless 45-75 through it since Thanksgiving.

Regarding the 1/2 rd. 1/2 oct. barrel ..........where are you planning on getting this barrel from? Also, what are you thinking regarding a rate of twist? Tx Johnny F

I am not doing a 1/2 round...but a 22" match grade round pencil barrel.  Pick any match grade vendor.  But if I were...not a big fan of the weight, I'd just turn down the octagon barrel that came on the rifle.  I'll run what ever the current 45-70 and 45-90 match grade barrel specs are.  Using 300 gr lead express bullets.  Nothing over 400 as they won't fit in the 1886 action with 45-90 brass.  You'd be hard pressed to get the 400gr bullets in there..as most won't fit for OAL.

Dropped into the shop today and took a look at my projects.  The vision above is getting close to completion.

Tang is welded up, barrel and mag tube cut and refit.  Case colors yet to do and a shot gun butt cut and fitted.  May be half way there or a bit less.  Pulled a shotgun butt off another rifle I have in queue (weld the tang and rechamber to 45-90)  to try out on a new gun showing up on Thursday.  That one has a crescent butt and have yet to decide how I want to restock it or if I want to.

Having  some options is always good if I can simply switch the wood out at my leisure.   Hopefully more pictures later in the week

New octagon, 22" button mag and shotgun butt showed up today.  A lot of work on a rifle that remains unfired.
Pictures to come shortly.  Less than a pound difference  between my 20" '76 full mag tube and  this button mag 22" barrel 86.

Great minds think alike :)  Second thing I did after unwrapping the '86 was pull the 20" '76 off the wall and put them both on my postal scale.

20" full mag '76 without the butt cuff to straighten the crescent out is 9# even, (leather cuff adds 3.7oz)
22" button mag '86 is 8# 8.5oz

But as much as I like the '86.  The '76 is such a better/more fun/smoother gun to shoot.

Dusty, your original '76 just gets me wanting a button mag '76 even more.

the new, unfired '86

and the two best things about the new '86.  The third being the shotgun butt  ;)

Yahoody  that button mag. 86 looks great! I have one of the Lyman hunter front sights on my 22" 40/60 76. really like it. Here is a pic. of my 24" button mag. 45/60 76 with the original wood back on it. The oiled stocks are dark but I did not want to change the old look so I left them as the rifle came to me, just dried some oil soaked wood in the tang area. I like the look , probably has been at many campfires ,over the 133yrs.,,,,,DT
