Best book on Wild Bill Hickok?
« on: December 15, 2014, 07:28:42 PM »
I've been plowing through a lot of old west history books lately, topics such as Whitneyville Walker revolvers, Billy the Kid, Wyatt Earp, and Virginia City Nevada.

I've never read any books on Hickok, anybody have one to recommend?

This is one that I have been looking at:

Rosa is the acknowledged leading expert on Hickok. You won't go wrong with that selection.

Coal Creek Griff,

Thanks for the reply, I did not know that Rosa was the leading expert.  I'll look into that book then.

Rosa has had unprecedented access to Hickok's descendants (along with their photos and family documents) and has found new material over the years to add to the history.  He is a careful and respected biographer.

X2

I was very taken with his book. My only quibble was the marked amount of repeated information, sometimes with
a particular incident of anecdote being repeated a few times across different chapters. I will agree, though, that
some part of that was being able to examine a particular kind of conduct through different influences. Just sayin...

Best Wishes,

Bruce

By the way, I recommend the book about Hickok's gunfights.
There is a brief chronology of his life, everything about the weapons he has owned (or supposed to have), accurate examination of his gunfights with diagrams, and how to draw guns techniques.
School of gunfighter !  ;D
