Don't want to muddy the water in St. George's very helpful Notes III, which address the Civil War era, so am branching off with this post that pertains only to service in the various military and paramilitary organizations of Texas.

The original owner of my SASS alias, Captain A. H. (Hamp) Cox, commanded  Company "B", Frontier Forces, from 8 Oct. 1870 to 30 May 1871  (This organization served concurrently with, but separate from, the much despised post-Civil War "State Police", and immediately preceded the much more famous "Frontier Battalion" of Texas Rangers.)  Both my great grandfather (as a 17-year old private) and his father (as the company's medical officer with the rank of Captain) served in Captain Cox's company.

I have been able to obtain considerable information, in the form of copies of original documents, pertaining to the service of my ancestors, as well as to my selected SASS namesake, from the Texas State Archives.  Their services aren't free, but the charges are minimal

Following is a list of organizations for which records are available, and contact information.
