Yet another Burnside Spencer question
« on: November 23, 2014, 06:31:36 PM »
Gents:
I have owned a M1865 Burnside Spencer Carbine since I was a teenager. Bought it when it was a beater and fixed it up over the years.

It has a 2 digit SN.

I have seen folks...especially "Herbert" help folks with historical information on these.

Can anyone tell me when/if the first 100 of these were delivered to the US Government and where they went after that?

I can provide specific SN if necessary.

Thanks.

Howdy Constellation Marine,

How about some photos of your Burnside Spencer, especially of the receiver area top sides and bottom, open and closed action.

Maybe this paragraph from the Marcot book will be of some value until Herbert and others offer there opinions.

Your carbine along with 999 other Burnside Spencers were paid for by the US government  April 15,1965,were they went from there  I can not tell you , some were sent to the army, most stayed in store until the 1870s then were sold of to large buyers of surplus military goods who in turn re-sold them on the surplus market, they turn up all over the world,Some were still being sold unused by the US government as lat as the 1890s(Banemans bought these and resold the to Sears ,who were advertising them around 1915 for $3.75 with 100 rounds of  to suit,I have this add , but just can not lay my hands on it

Sorry for the delay.  Thanks for the information on my Spencer.  Now I know some history that I didn't before.  I think its cool that it was delivered to the Federal government the very day President Lincoln was assassinated. I tried to attach pix but my files are way too large according to the directions (no more than 400 KB per image).

C.M.,

Send the photos to me and I will post them for you.  fsgrand2@fairpoint.net  But, please not more than 8 photos.  Need photos especially of the receiver area, top, bottom, sides, and with the action open and closed.
