Problem with new 1873 clone
« on: November 22, 2014, 12:50:38 PM »
Hey everybody I wonder if you can give me some advice.

I just purchased a new Uberti 1873 in 45 Colt. It's a very beautiful firearm. I shot it for the first time yesterday. It is an accurate shooter. Now the problem.

Frequently when I work the lever to chamber another round the case mouth gets hung up on the back of the chamber and will not go in. I have to gently bump it a few times and or sweet talk it in. Sometimes it chambers like butter but sometimes not. The more I shot it the better it worked. I found that if I relaxed my wrist, worked the lever quickly and worked the lever with just my middle and ring finger (leaving the pinky out) that the problem practically went away, but if using all three fingers it jammed up. It almost seems like it's tuned for rapid fire cowboy action shooting.

To contrast I have a Uberti 1866 clone in 44-40 that I've owned and shot for 16 years and I have never had this problem. But the 44-40 cartridge is tapered with a slight bottleneck and will naturally chamber more easily I would think.

Do I just need to break it in or does something need adjustment?

Try seating the bullets a bit further out. Good luck

Take a look at this: http://www.dorseyfoto.com/73/73fix.htm.  If this is the type of problem you're having, perhaps it will help.

This link has some info as well, if you scroll down: http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php/topic,23981.0.html

Thanks for the info. That's not quite the problem. It's not the last cartridge hanging up down low in the magazine. It snaps into position in front of the bolt/breech block but will not always feed into the chamber.

The funny thing is I took it out again today after a good cleaning and ran 100 rounds through it and no problems. Maybe it was just a burr on the back of the chamber that needed some natural polishing.
