Spencer 1860 Carbine Serial # check for new member.
« on: October 31, 2014, 12:12:05 PM »
Hello fellow spencer owners. I am the proud new owner of an 1860 Carbine Serial number 47448. It still has the original .52 6 groove barrel that is in great shape. The Wood is also in good shape and all there. The back part of the stock has an area where a saddle staple once lived. The Texas gun dealer told me a story that the staples were used with a sling to carry the carbine on the soldiers back while riding. There is one cartouche, almost hidden on the left side behind the ring bar.

Walksfire,

I checked on your Spencer Carbine serial #47448.  Hope you read my serial # disclaimer, if not, please read it ;D

In my SRS books I find Spencer Carbine serial # 47450 issued to a member of Company D, First Vermont Volunteer Cavalry in February, 1865. OR, #47439 issued to a member of Company E, 19th New York Volunteer Cavalry in September, 1864.  It appears that more Spencer Carbines in your serial # range (4700 (+) or (-) went to the New York Cavalry Unit.

Did you read my Spencer Serial # Disclaimer ??? ???

Thanks for joining SSS ;)

According to the Springfield Research records the closest numbers to your gun are 47439 issued in 9-64 to Co. E 19th New York Vol. cavalry and serial number 47450 that was issued to Co. D 1st Vermont vol. cavalry on 2-65.
