1873 uberti dovetail size
« on: September 30, 2014, 08:57:03 AM »
I haven't been able to find what size the dovetail is dispite searching the internet. Quite hard to measure . I assume its 3/8.
I would like to get a brass bead front site. The specs for the ones I was looking at say "fits 1873 winchester" but don't mention Uberti.

I believe all of the dovetails are standard with the dimension referring to the height of the sight.  You may have to file the bottom of the flat on the dovetail to get it to fit.

They are the 3/8 dovetail. Measure what you got to determine the height you will need.

I don't know what the right way to do it is, but I've mounted several sights on 73's and I don't like filing the slot. I prefer to file the base of the sight until it fits.

I purchased a 3/8" dovetail site for a Uberti that was "especially for Uberti rifles".  It only took about an hour with a file to get it to fit.

usually just takes a few minutes stoning the bottom a little at a time until it fits correctly.

-----if you start out with one that is of proper dimension-----

Never EVER, EVER, EVER, EVER, file the slot in the barrel.  Always file the cheapest thing -- the sight.  Replacing barrels from sloppy file work is expensive.
