USFA Lightning ID
« on: September 15, 2014, 07:14:29 PM »
I drug my USFA Lightning carbine in .44-40 out of the safe a few days ago and figured I might as well shoot it.  Does anyone (Gary G?) know how to tell the difference between a regular USFA carbine and the baby carbine?  Doesn't make any difference for shooting, but I am curious if it is a baby carbine.

Thanks.  I have that most of that information.  Problem is unless you know the dimensions of the barrels you can't tell one from the other from the pictures or the description.  The forearms also seem to vary from photo to photo.  Mine has a tapered barrel with a relatively small OD at the muzzle.  However, I don't have anything to compare it with.  Hoping to find some dimensions to help figure it out.

Sounds like you have the Baby carbine.  Though both carbine barrels were tapered, the Baby had a more extreme taper resulting in a small diameter at the muzzle end.  Also, there's a much larger gap between the barrel and mag tube.

Retail was $1995 or about  $245 more than a standard carbine with a checkered forend.  It was $515 more than a standard carbine with a border checker on the forend.

Here's a photo of the business end.  The barrel near the muzzle is slightly smaller than the mag tube.

A side view of the barrel and mag tube would help.

That's the standard carbine with the border checkering.  Full retail was $1480.
