I too must forgo the convention.
To add to my sadness,Saturday I dropped by my Friendly FFL , you never know what you'll find consigned
This day however, gloom in the form of an 1885 Springfield rifle... so much butchery must have been Myron von Frankenstein
or should read Moron.
The rifle was
cut chopped to carbine length, crudely crowned and some kinda ramp sight applied.
Moving back the correct Buffington rear sight , but not the correct guarded barrel band.
The stock itself has been sanded, looks like he quit at 150 grit and he sanded the cartouche to an unreadable depression.
The Hammer, either was cut of broken off , and "ol' Myron welded a straight thumb pull to replace it , and scraped a file across it to form a crude XX, the weld is barely dressed and a bright incorrect hammer screw completes the butchery ...
The butt plate, is made from thin sheet metal ...
Some wag brought it in for an appraisal, claims it's been the family a long time... shameful...
Anthony asked my my thoughts ....
I told him, junk ...sadly junk maybe the action & the lock plate were worth saving , the rest buried
