Plain Jane Holster
« on: September 01, 2014, 09:38:08 AM »
I'm looking for a a plain dark brown Mexican Loop holster for a 5 1/2" Colt, right hand. Everyone I've looked at locally was apparently made for 'B' Westerns.

Try one made by 'Oklahoma Leather' - they're pretty much what was available at the time, and if you wrap them in newspapers to remove some of the oils - they're not that bad, and will do until you find something better.

'The Fort' in Lincoln, Nebraska has them - give Delmonico a call @ 1-877-907-3678 (toll-free)

I don't know why folks are so convinced OS is oily. When I started SASS I wasn't sure how I wanted my rigs to be configured...so I got several holsters and belts and found what I wanted. Then I had RedDog make what I wanted..and used the OS as backups for friends and family wanted to learn to shoot. No excess oil in the beginning and still no excess oil.

and they look very much like some of the old holsters I have seen. There were many rigs that were unlined, wasn't there?

anyway still a good starter rig.

just my 2cents

btw, pix is of Wendy, most of rhe Silver Queen Mine Regulators LOVED the way she wore them rigs..

I started with some Oklahoma leather from cabelas. After about ten years I replace one of the holsters with one made of a little stiffer leather. The belt was oily when I got it & stained my pants, never noticed that with the holsters.

this is how I ended up getting my present and future rigs. (I like my holsters to ride a bit high. ) anyways I saved a lot of money by not getting my "custom" rigs until I knew what I wanted.

I just don't want a "newby" to spend several hundreds of dollars trying to find what he wants.

now if he does his own work or has a good friendhe can save a bit of dough.) I got to be pretty good friends with Paul at RedDog

anyways every one has their own way to skin a cat, this is mine.

My Leathersmith retired, he made real nice copies of holsters that you would have seen the average joe carry out West. I have one holster but it's for a 7 1/2" and I use 5 1/2". I'm not in a real rush but can't wait 'til my birthday either. There's a gunshow next weekend, if I can't buy there then I'll order something.

Here are a few rigs me and Old Top talked RedDog into making for us:

I dreamed up a double crossdraw for my scout look. made for 1875 Remingtons

This rig Old Top dreamed up for a pair of Schofields. (course we has all the accessories for it too!)

This here is my everyday shootin "ringo" style rig

and finally this is a pair of Duke rigs El Paso Saddlery made for me about 30 years ago.
just thought some of these styles could give you an idea of what kind of rig you want. what ever you come up with, show us pictures.
thanks for putting up with me

I've been Shooting SASS since '97. I try to be historically right while not being a Nazi. I've walked onto a movie set and got 'extra' work because I looked right. I'll let ya'll know how this comes out.

Walton Taylor has a very old looking pattern plane as heck Mexican loop.  What about David Carrico?

OK< today I received my new holster from Camano Ridge Custom Leather.
It fits my Colt SAA perfectly. It looks great, sorry but I can't get a photo to post(?)
I am real happy with the work.
