Chaparral 76 .45/60
« on: September 01, 2014, 12:25:29 AM »
I finally was able to take out my 76 in 45/60. I found 100 rds of 45/70 brass at a gun show about 2 years ago. I bought a Redding trim die and preceded to cut em down. I cast a bullet that weighed about 330 grains and used  H4895. It was the min. Load. I loaded about 60 rds. I got to the range at 100 yards. My buddy set up a steel target about 4" wide. I loaded the mag tube and preceded to operate the lever. Couldn't get a round on the elevator. So I decided to load them one at a time about 20 rds. Then loaded some more in the the tube then it decided to feed them. Next problem came with the lock up with the lever. Some rounds went threw without a problem others I was afraid of bending the lever. But my friend had been a carpenter for 30 years and was use to swinging a hammer. He was able to get the ones I couldn't fire fire. Once I got all the bugs worked out the sights were shooting about 4" to the left so I aimed to the right 4" and hit that piece of steel every time. So I feel pretty good every problem worked out ok.  ;D

This is just a comment about the use of 45/70's for the chaparrel.  The standard rim thickness of a 45/70 runs 0.064" to 0.067".  The chaparrel calls for a rim thickness of 0.062".  This has been mentioned by others on this forum. The 45/70 rims need to be thinned down.  That could be your problem with closing the lever as you stated at the end of your posting.

Thanks for the info. There was one round that took 4 tries to fire. The firing pin  didn't even hit the primer.

My rifle has worked out just fine after some little problems. The main one was the thickness of the rims. I took care of that problem real quick. The rifle has been accurate. I haven't shot it on paper yet. But I have been shooting steel targets at 100 yards. I'd like to take it down to our longest range 375 yards. I also want to put a tang site on. I bought and sold a 73 Chappy in .45 Colt to a friend who also hasn't had any trouble. After hearing all the major problems with these rifles. I was kinda scarred about ordering these rifles after all the horror stories I read about them. But I'm glad I took the chance on these two rifles. I went hunting to S.D. For pheasants back in the 90's. I needed a shirt. So a my friend who lived in Waconia, MN. He took me to Cabelas south of his place. When we went in I couldnt make up my mind. So I went over were all the guns were located. I guess Cabelas had ordered way to many  73 rifles in 45Colts. I believe they were $599. I bought one. Took it out to the range. It shot like a house on fire. When I took this rifle out with the Chappy .45 Colt out they shot with out any problems. It sounded just like the movie Winchester 73, I wish I had the money for a 22" in 50/95.  ;D
