This may be a silly question - but why did the early Winchesters have a lever latch?

Yep, the spring that holds the lever up can or will weaken over time allowing the lever to hang loose just a bit. Winchester fixed this by adding that latch. We use a couple of '73s at work, one has just started to have the lever hang down.
