Euroarms 1873
« on: July 30, 2014, 06:12:48 PM »
HI all,

Im hoping some of you will be able to help me source some info on my Euroarms lever action. I tried to get some information from Euroarms USA and Italy but they wont answer my emails ? pretty disappointing.

I have purchased a 1873 Euroarms lever action 44/40 rifle. Serial 2010. I was hoping for a date of manufacture and any info on max powder/chamber pressure if possible as I am about to start reloading ammunition for it and I would like some information to help me do it safely as there is no information anywhere on this rifle. I was hoping someone would remember the rifles or perhaps some some info archived away.
Im just about to start reloading as well, a new venture for me, I have a Lee Breeech Lock Challenger set and shall try some Black MZ first up. Ive just been scoping the net for as much info as I could about powders, pressures etc.

I really glad to join CasCity I think its going to make life much easier with all your expert knowledge to bounce around. Great reading so far.

Regards Sean

The manufacture date will be coded within  brackets like these [  ]  Pretty sure being Euroarms it will be

[AD] or thru [AZ]   This would be in the late 70's to 1990 (I don't remember for sure when Euroarms last made the their 73's  I think I'm correct with that range...

Euroarms is no more, other than part of Davide Pedersoli Firearms ( as he bought them out )

I'll leave the (SAAMI) loads to the pards here that can, better talk reloading & pressures.... I believe they will mention .44-40 @ 13,000 cup
when planets align...do the deal !

Cheers Major,

Yes I see, I have a XX9 which the internet tells me is 1973 model. Great find.

When I purchased it I didn't realise the mine field I entered. Parts have been very difficult, Ive been using winchester parts with some minor fitting.

Yes I see the 13000 cup? mentioned elsewhere as a general rule, some say psi, its a tad confusing, I can't measure either personally. I would think under 13000 either cup/psi ( yes I know they are not the same :-) ) under 1200 ft sec as well and lean to slower powders is the safe bet.

Thank you for taking the time to help out.

Regards Sean

Bushranger,

The 1973 Production "Proof" date would be in Roman Numerals, Such as XXIX for the year of 1973.

Also, Uberti made all the parts and pieces.
Euroarms of Italy (started in about 1972), also known as Armi San Paolo bought the parts from Uberti and assembled and finished them to their specs.

Old Uberti '73 parts will interchange, but they too can be very difficult to find today.
Euroarms of America, aka, EoA was established in 1974 or 5, as the USA importer for Euroarms of Italy, primarily for Muzzle Loading BP Arms.

I hope this addresses some of your questions.
My best,
 Blair

Thanks Blair, that Uberti tip is very handy.
I went with winchester due to the ejection cover spring being of leaf style where the current uberti is a compression spring. Uberti Aust said they did not do a leaf so assumed it was more winchester part orientated. The ejection cover, spring, screw and guide all fit with minor fitting, thankfully.
I do need a rear barrel band so I shall hunt for an Urberti one now with your tip.
You mention Euroarms starting in 1972, I wondered why my serial number was so low. serial No 2010, would have been early in the run, I wonder how many they made?
My barrel actually has [XX9] which is listed as an Italian weapon year number 1973,
If your interested here is part of the extract:

Using Roman Numerials, starting with 1954 as 'X'.

X = 1954
XI = 1955
XII = 1956
XIII = 1957
XIV = 1958
XV = 1959
XVI = 1960
XVII = 1961
XVIII= 1962
XIX = 1963
XX = 1964
...continues without skipping until

XXVI = 1970

Then, for some reason not really explained, they switched to:
XX7 = 1971
XX8 = 1972
XX9 = 1973

Then back to:
XXX = 1974

then a letter
AA=1975
AB=1976
AC=1977
AD=1978
AE=1979
AF=1980
AH=1981 (notice they skip AG)
AI=1982
AL=1983 (skipped AJ and AK)
AM=1984
AN=1985
AP=1986 (skipping AO)
AS=1987 (skiping AQ and AR)
AT=1988
AU=1989
AZ=1990 (skipping AV,AW,AX, and AY)

BA=1991
BB=1992
BC=1993 etc etc

Bushranger,

Thank you.
What is the Italian Proof year of production on your 1873?
The Italian government usually establishes these marking years in advance of actual production?

Bushranger,

Yes I have the same list as you. It show 1973 as XX9.
The all Roman Numerals would be XXIX
If all Arabic Number were used it would read 29.
