5744 in 50-70 carbine
« on: July 23, 2014, 02:50:58 PM »
Just got back from the range confirming the '0' of my Shiloh 50-70 carbine.

We do a mini-Quigley shoot in our annual CAS  match which consists of three 20 oz. tomato cans shot off hand at 100 yds. Best out of three wins.
I'd like to do this with BP loads, but can't get the degree of accuracy necessary to guarantee hits, even trying a duplex load.

The load that does it consists of 28/5744 and a 375 gr bullet from a Rapine mould. This load is good with the Lyman 515141 450 gr bullet as well. Just a little more step-to-the rear (aka recoil).
We have a 10" x 10" gong at 100 yds that I can ring consistently using either bullet weight. This would make a good deer/bear load out to 100 yds as well.

In the past I've hit 2/3, but this year I want 3/3. The carbine can do it if I do my part.
