I recently read an excellent book that I would highly recommend. The book was Six Years With the Texas Rangers, by James B. Gillette. I read the electronic book which can be downloaded for free here:
http://www.texasranger.org/E-Books/E-Books.htmlGillette was a ranger in the Frontier Battalion during the mid-1870s to the early 1880s (here’s a link with more info:

I have read quite a number of memoirs and many seem sharply slanted. This one likely carries a slant too, but much of it has a very honest feel. I believe that he did his best to tell his story the way he saw it. He doesn’t make himself out to be the hero above all others, nor does he claim to have played a major role in every event he relates. On the other hand, he had a number of pretty remarkable (and often humorous) adventures.
I purchased a used e-reader just so that I could read out of print books like this and it paid off with the first one I read!
