Victorian - Edwardian "Shooting Party"
« on: June 01, 2014, 07:50:47 PM »
http://www.vfgpa.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Edwardian-Shoot-Poster.jpg

This was a Vintage shotgun shoot with a bit of a historical fun aspect. I ignored the club newsletter, so only allowed myself one day to get ready. I put on my new kilt, picked up my newly acquired 16 gauge Merkell side by side and went to the range.  I got 23/25 at trap for my first shots through the Merkell, but really embarrassed myself at Five-Stand.

About 25-30 shooters showed up. One third dressed up pretty accurately, 1/3 had a stab at it and 1/3 showed up to shoot. There were four 16 gauges, a twenty or two, the rest were twelves. There were a couple of OUs, but NO repeaters. One of the SxSs was an English gun of 1880 vintage with damascus barrels and an underlever action.

These vintage shotgun shoots are so closely related to our sport that I just had to attend. As a suggestion, Putting on a vintage shoot in partnership with a shotgun club and/or a buckskinning club, just might spread the word in both directions.  At this shoot the buckskinners who showed up were making an open invitation to some of the more history oriented shooters to come out when they have a BP shotgun event.

The next time I attend a vintage shoot, long-eared actions and The Holy Black will be attending with me.

My score of 23/25 at trap apparently won me third place for the trap event.

My prize was a glass beermug.

"A man in a kilt is a man and a half"--Lord Kitchener

That's the way to shoot!

I love Merkels, really fine little guns.

I used to go to a driven pheasant shoot sometimes and some of us would dress the part.  I shot my 28 gauge and I would always bring home my share of birds, ocassionally I was top gun by a fair piece.

I wear the MacIntyre hunting, as that is the clan of my Scottish ancestors on Grandmother's side, although the MacIntyre's I go back to were here in the late 1600s or early 17s.  My wife is a Forsythe and Andersen and still has family in "The Old Countree".

My kilt was an opportunity acquisition.  "Weathered Hunting Sinclair"  The Sinclairs were a Norman family that were granted land in Scotland. The closest relationship I have is that I am 1/4 Saunderson, another Norman family, but from Ireland this time.

One of the standard history books on British Columbia is titled THE WEST BEYOND THE WEST.

I missed it again this year due to my wife suffering a shoulder injury. You would have been very welcome. The reason I keep posting this kind of event is that it may inspire your local gun clubs to host similar events. Spreading the experience among the wider shotgun communities is the aim.
