What's in your bag ?
« on: May 18, 2014, 04:54:07 AM »
" a play on words " of what's in your wallet "

I suspect, many of you are SASS shooters and as a result have gun carts....  :)

I have been shooting NCOWS & and SASS over the years ,and have tired of lugging a cart ( I've made several ) .
Each time I made one , I tried to minimize and lighten the next incarnation...

This was the last cart I made welded alum and run flat pneumatic tires , weight 7 lbs ... carried 2 rifle & 2 SXS
It was lost in my Barn fire a few years ago...

ever since, I have minimize ...so here is my idea, these bags carry all I really need ...heck the spare guns are not that many steps away in the SUV.

So whats in them ...

Ammo of course ... just enough to cover my match needs  & some reloads

These Gun Smithing drivers ( this is little 3 piece set in a wallet by Cylinder & Slide ) I have 12 piece set in the SUV

wooden mallet

I have some oilers

I have had the little pin point can several years ..I have Gibbs Lube in it.

This two chamber round one is the bees knees...
It is a Russian Mosin Nagant accessory... about $3 on ebay
I was given mine by my FFL...

anyway it will have full strength Ballistol gun cleaner in one side & a mixture (moose milk ) refill in the other chamber.

which leads to my Spray bottle ( for moose milk ) Yes I shoot Black ( this just the right size for a day match )

I have a cloth draw string bag for spent shells

Course I have room for my eye glasses & ear protection

I find this is working quite well for me ...other opinions may vary  :)

I don't have a cart, and can't really carry one since I'm riding a motorcycle to my matches.  I use a soft Gibson guitar case with back pack straps to carry my long guns, and an L.A. Police Gear Bailout Bag to carry my two revolvers and ammunition.  I keep a Leatherman type tool in my pocket for fixing things.

Interesting topic!

Here's what is in my bag (Saddle Bags)...

I put ten Rifle and ten Pistol rounds into mini burlap bags. I put enough of these burlap bags to cover the ammo required for a match plus some spares into one Saddle Bag. The other Saddle Bag gets two boxes of shotgun shells. You would be surprised how heavy these Saddle Bags can get filled up. For NCOWS Matches I just carry the Saddle Bags with my tools etc. close by in my car. For SASS matches I drape the Saddle Bags over the Gun Cart handle with my tools etc. in the cart.

When I go to the loading table, I bring a bag of bullets with me. After shooting the stage, at the unloading table my empty's go back into the burlap bag.

Here's what's really interesting.... I made these Saddle Bags from patterns that Major 2 sent to me many years ago. Thanks again Major.

Those are very nice John, I remember those ... :)

Like you for NCOWS just these bags....I haven't shot SASS in years so I hadn't needed a cart.

But we now share waddy, with the SASS discipline.... We hold NCOWS Matches every other first Sat. of the Month.
and SASS members support us...so I will return the favor and shoot some SASS matches on the Second Sunday's.

You're right they get a tad heavy ,
I made a light folding gun rack that serves well , will allow 16 long guns it stays at the range and we just
tote it to the stages.

Howdy Major,

Prairie Terri and I like the saddle bags that you posted in the second post. Where did you get them? Did they come with the handles?

Hi Major

Nice rig, I plan on making a set of saddle bags at some point.  I understand why all y'all did what you mention with one exception.  Major, what's the mallet for?

I got a mallet like that for leather work, and a brass one for pins in the 1911 bag, but well you got me on that one.

Thanks

I designed it, and it was made for me by Bluesman (Ray Hancett) to my specs.
The handle was in the design.

I use it to fish ... It is really a Crab mallet

but I use it Ice fishing ... All I need is that, and can of peas, after cutting a hole in the ice...

I put pea's around the hole ...and when the fish come up to take a pee, I hit them in the ICE hole   ;D

...it also serves to tap a COLT wedge on my Cap & Ball's

Howdy Major, how was the trip home from Springfield?  I use a carpet bag containing ammo and a thermos full of coffee, that's it.  Is that minimal enough for ya?

Well, eventful .... we got pull over about 40 miles out , by a Highway Patrolman ....seems John was weaving a tad ....
No ticket , just checking us out ...we stopped for some coffee and proceeded on...
Took us 19 hours .... I'm NOT doing that again !   I understand it's in Springfield again in 2015, I'll FLY.

Carpet bag is quite minimal, good on ya !

Jeez Major, that joke's older than me, probably use, and maybe both of us together.  I use a Brownell's brass / poly mallet for that purpose.  I think I'll be another masonry bag to carry my CAS stuff in.

Well it depends on what category I'm shooting.  My usual stuff includes a leatherman, sqib rod, Brownells screwdriver with bits, first aid kit, small hammer with plastic and brass tips.  If I'm shooting smokeless it will have ammo and a loading strip in my saddlebags.  If I'm shooting frontiersman I'll have the stuff required for charging the pistols, windex, paper towels in something located somewhere.
