Poundo and cutting board
« on: May 17, 2014, 01:27:20 PM »
I've been shopping for places where I can buy this stuff in larger sizes than what is usually available at leather supply companies. I don't know for sure but I think the black rubber mats that is sold as "poundo" is Styrene Butadiene Rubber, also known as SBR or skirtboard. After looking at a bunch of rubber manufacturer sites, I checked Amazon and found a hell of a price 24x36 sheets at $65.

Then there is the Sanatec cutting board and I was thinking about black for better contrast.

Is there somewhere else I should look at for cutting boards in a similar size?

Thoughts or suggestions?

If you are talking about a true cutting board, I wouldn't think the rubber would work. Especially with a head knife. It occurs to me that an utility knife with the adjustable blade would work with the blade in the lowest notch. Otherwise, wouldn't you slice through everything?
I use the polyboard. A big kitchen one about 12X18".  I need to find two that are about 24X36". One for the cutting table and one for the "detail" table.

No, I'm going to get some poly cutting board for cutting and "poundo" for under my slab. Trying to figure out which for a general work surface as well.

I bought a cutting board at JoAnn Fabrics. It is approximately 34 x 58. Pretty expensive $75.00. My wife gets 40-50% off coupons which helps.

Haystacker, I believe you are referring to the thin (most are green) mats that quilters use. I have two of those on a table. Our knives play havoc with those. They are mean to be used with roller cutters and cloth.

I discovered early on that the thin memory mats create friction with a head knife or utility knife. I always cut on a polyboard because very little of the knife penetrates and it seems to glide across the surface. With a sharp knife of course. ;D

PS: My marble slab resides in a wooden box with 2" to spare on the sides and maybe 1" higher than the slab. I filled it with sand and placed the slab on the sand.

Go to a feed store and look for smooth face horse stall mats - they come in 1/2" and 3/4" (and even thicker) - here at the local Tractor Supply the 1/2" measure 3' x 4' and sell for $24.95 the 3/4" are IIRC 4' x 6' and sell for $49.95 - I have used them for 30+ years as cutting boards and poundo boards - they are very tough and hold up VERY well and the cuts will heal for a long time. They can usually be turned over and the other side used when the cutting surface gets too ragged (for me that's several years). They are often on sale for $5.00 or so off.
I personally don't like the poly boards since the grooves from cutting don't "heal" and will grab the blade and pull it off line - yep you can re-sand over time, but that's always a big mess

here's a lik to the 4' x 6' http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/rubber-horse-stall-mat-4-ft-x-6-ft

Good idea, Chuck. I've used plywood for years. Easy and cheap to replace. Next time I wear one ragged ( getting close, now) I'll run over to the local tractor supply and get one.

The stall mats at the tractor supply near me are not smooth. Does anyone know where to find large sheets of poly board at reasonable price? I want one 48x60x1/2

Look into Starboard

read about it here http://www.starboardplastic.com/  but you should be able to buy it locally if you are near a larger city

There are different types of stall mats out there , check out several feed stores for what they sell, the ones I have are smooth and come in 4'x6' lengths, they make great cutting surfaces and are kind on your cutting blade...

I've been using the cutting board in the Amazon link for four years now. Very  happy with it. It's available in different sizes. I do like the black color, easier on my eyes.
