1851 Signature Colt
« on: May 14, 2014, 09:01:04 AM »
Hi Guys, I have just obtained an 1851 Colt Navy Signature series.

It looks to have been badly cleaned or kept holstered, as the piece has rust pitting marks all over.

Is there anyone on here that can advise me how to bring it back to good looking condition, or point me in the direction of any instruction on the subject?

The internals and action are crisp and clean, possibly not even been shot.

You didn't post a photo and the description of the problem is pretty vague.  Light flecks, deep pits, bluing mostly there or all gone?  The old tried and true method of cleaning rust off is light oil and 0000 steel wool.  Put on the oil and lightly buff it with the steel wool.  This will take off the rust and leave the blue.

I've taken the photo but this stupid Windows 8.1 App won't let me do anything with it!!!!

The marks are very small but it's as though the majority of the rust has been removed and left small but tactile abrasions speckled all over.

I'll try the wire wool method and report back, thankyou.

Hi Rick, I normally use 'Photobucket' but it's the format of Windows 8.1 that appears to be defeating me at the moment.

I've found that bronze wool works even better.
